wow great idea. I have a couple questions...

"4x4 backing" - you mean 4 inch by 4 inch ?
" use no more than 3 coatings ... " - is that up to 3 different projects or up to 3 layers of coating on 1 project ?

I have some cool ideas. This will be fun !

Now that you mention it, I wouldn't mind seeing more of your work.

How about the submittal of:

2 projects.
using no more than 3 types of coatings. (multiple layers are fine).
4'x4' or smaller.

What is your opinion?

hmmm :headscrat ... a 4 ft square is kinda big for one idea I have , just because it would take alot of this certain additive. I think if people submit pictures , it doesnt matter what size the backing is , as long as its big enough to take a good picture. Maybe like 18" square is minimum and 48" square is max ? Just a thought.

2 projects sounds good but I bet alot of people would like to just put all their effort into making 1 real nice one. We need more people to chime in and voice their opinion.

Youre the ringmaster here , you get to lay down the rules.

I would vote that they should all be 12" square... because that is an easy size... But, I really think the important thing is that all the samples be the same size regardless of what that size is...

So, I suggest that everyone should submit the exact same size to make it fair for all...

Alright guys, your opinions are well respected…

The size of a project should not take priority over an “Artisans Touch”

I just so happen to have a “Bathroom Floor Project” that needs attention and wouldn’t mind using that as my project… if you guys are o.k. with the –Artisans Touch- reasoning?

With the arrival of gelling matrix's and other sustainable additives… I am quite anxious to experiment with their effects on different applications.

LET THE GAMES BEGIN!!!

I think it's great if you want to show off your work. I'm looking forward to seeing it.

I really think it's a cool idea to have a contest. But, I don't think the contest should be built around a participant's project. I know that if I were going to be a participant (which I'm not because I'm a manufacturer and not an installer) that I would be a bit skeptical of a contest where the rules are designed toward one participants project.

I think if it's going to be a contest/challenge that it's got to be a level playing field for everyone. I think that only a few ground rules are necessary:

1. All the same substrate and size no matter what that is... I think the size should be something that makes sense for a 3'x5' sheet of tile backerboard. I think that the people that participate may make several tries before picking the one they want to enter in the photograph. So, it might get expensive if the size were 3'x5'. So, if we wanted to do 12"x12" you can get 15 tiles out of a single sheet of backerboard. If 18"x18" then you will get 6 and a bit of scrap. Is 12"x12" big enough?

2. Suitable for a garage... Since this is 'Garage Journal' it probably ought to have something to do with the garage.

3. There should be a limited amount of entries... So, each participant could enter multiple times but not unlimited. I would say... maybe... 5...

4. Let's make it interesting with some CASH for a prize! I think that we would be willing to donate $10 per entrant (person not entry) up to $100 in the form of a gift card... I'm sure that we would NOT do one to Walmart... but... Home Depot... Lowes... Target... ??? Maybe someone else here would want to sweeten the pot too? Winner take all???

5. Since many people don't check the forums that often... shouldn't the submission dates maybe be the whole month of August and then a voting thread to run for 2 weeks the first of September? I think this would get the most participation.

That's about all I can think of right now... I think this is a cool idea... but I think the playing field should be level for all...

Only the 3 of us are in this thread. We need some more people !

How about we put forth our efforts to support different products, excellent workmanship and enjoy the spirit of competition as it was always meant to be… with the sense one can Triumph over self-limitations…

Today's Garages are becoming part of the Household, so I really don't see the need to separate the garage any differently. Sheds are where Gasoline, Oils and other combustible materials belong.... not in a room thats part of the house.

Maybe most pro installers are probably too busy installing jobs. I know I am.

IMO, a 2x2 or 4x4 of anything not only is it not enough to allow for artistic expression and will not foto well at 72 dpi of a cpu screen. Or at least not enough to fully appreciate any detail.

Make it easy and just make it the best before and after pic with a little explanation of what it took to get it to make it look from "A" to "B". Again, just a thoguht.

Thank you for your input guys….

After careful thought, I will now make motion for the Coating Challenge to be open for the entire month of August.

“X-Game Coating Challenge I.” Will be the August event. II. and so forth for upcoming months.

As this will be Democratically achieved, it will be important to put forth your opinions ASAP.

“Garageguy” has made a Premium contribution supporting “Bigtorques” #4 post…

I say yay that "Artistic Expression" can be answerable to any size project…any nays?
