Stopped at a garage sale this morning picked these up for $5, the guy was selling them because he couldn't handle the smell anymore. Apparently they've been this way since he got them 25 years or so ago.

My question is is there anything to kill this nasty smell that I think is from the handles. My plan for today was to toss them in some pinesol and soak them for awhile.

haha I have had that exact set for about the same time. They smell overpoweringly like Puke. They have smelled that way since new! They are really good drivers BTW.

I have a boat load of craftsman screwdrivers that I have had forever with the same kind of handles. I have soaked cleaned done it all the smell is still there a little bit. I scrubbed mine sprayed them with a clearcoat you put on plastic car models that helped immensly. They seem to get a white crud on the handles that has to be continously scrubbed off.

Ahh, the infamous Xcelite baby puke smell - really ripe when the drivers are stored in a closed toolbox for a long time. All their stuff does it - nutdrivers, screwdrivers, everything. Never did find a solution.

I wonder what sealants might be effective and not react with the acetate or whatever the handles are made of?

I would think putting them out in the sun for a week or so might help dry the plastic. That should cut down on the smell. The sun takes the bleach out of diapers and drys fruit. The sun is good for infections and a host of other things. I know the sun is hard on plastic but the rosin in those tools did not have enough hardner. They made a boat load of handles with the wrong mix The ones I have form the 60's don't smell but some I have had form the 70's did .

The sun is good for diaper rash on adult bums as well. LOL
Sun dry them there tools.
