Y-code keys from toolboxes.

... Possibly a very stupid question
I noticed that one of my Snap On boxes has Y346 on it.
Ebay is full of Y__ keys for sale.

I suspected that this could be related to the codes on the locks which the boxes came from. Spoke to the company who Snap On recommended me to ask for a lost key for a box, they told me that it does not work for KRA 58B boxes as they are too old (doubt that - my other one is 1955). I had a hope that may be I can get a key with Snap On sign for my 1963 as the company sent me non-snap on key...
Tried to get the answer online - also no luck...

Does anybody know what does this Y *** (3 digit number) represents?

The code defines the both what key blank and the cuts on the key - what cuts go in what positions on the blank.

You'll probably have a hard time finding a key with the original logo.

it might be easier to find a key with the logo on it, and have your lock re keyed to work with that key

Some locksmiths would have the tables but even if you had the information you need a cutter capable of creating a new key.

Each type of key blank has a data card like this that shows the cut depths and cut positions.

The Cobbler suggestion is probably the right way to go if you want a logo key - the locks come out easily and are easy to rekey - as long as the key fits into the cylinder.

I am currently waiting for the replacement key from the company recommended by Snap On. If the second one does not work, I will try to figure out which model I need to to fit the lock cylinder and ask a locksmith to adjust lock for the key (I assume they should have the small pins in stock)

The lock innards are standard for the most part.

Most old Snap-on locks were made by Fort - now CompX Fort - and were standard locks used in many applications. The key blanks were customized. I have some 70's era SO boxes with the original keys but replacements would likely be generic blanks unless I could find someone who had NOS blanks laying around. Locksmith don't often buy marked key blanks because they are much more expensive than generic ones and not all marked ones are available.
