Man that vise sure looks beat up. Nonetheless, I'd still have bought it for $5 too. Nice find!

Could a machine shop remachine the jaws and work surfaces? Seem like a great vise to restore and use! :)

One of the replaceable jaws is missing but they are readily available for these vises. That should make it functional again. The guy used to have a large muffler shop and when he retired he took this one for his home shop.I think a quick wire wheeling, new jaws and a rattle can of similar to original blue and I'll be happy with it.No sense in a restoration since I plan to work it hard.

So I figured I'd clean up the vise a little today and see how bad it is.First off I gave it a spray of Capers magic vise cleaner. These are some pics after a spray and sitting for about 30seconds.

So here it is after being sprayed, sitting for a couple mins and then a quick wire brushing by hand.Sprayed down with some brakekleen and dryed.Looks a whole lot better already.I was surprised how much of the blue was still there under the ****.

The original owner must have been using it for quite awhile with the missing jaw.The sliding jaw is pretty beat up.I pulled a jaw insert of one of the other no6 records in the shop to see how bad it's gunna be.It appears to be a 1/4 taller than the original inserts. This vise is older than the others in our shop.I'm thinking I may just make my own replaceable jaw so that it will match up better.

Are Record vises still being manufactured in Great Britain?

Negative. Sold to Irwin some time ago. Not even sure they are or have kept the vise line. Check eBay for the remains of the Records vises. I got one some time ago from there....and later sold it.

Back around 1975, I got the same vise free because the front jaw was broken right where it says No. 6. Got it welded and it lasted until 2005. Changing a driveshaft U-joint finally did it in.

Checked around for another jaw and one from Record (Irwin) was more than a new vise (with freight etc.) I remembered Princess Auto sold Records, so I checked with a guy there that I kinda knew. He said they didn't fool around with parts because they offered a "Lifetime Guarantee" on those vises. Oh really!! I explained the circumstances....didn't buy it there, welded etc and he said bring it in. Couldn't get home fast enough. My new vise now sits proudly in my shop.

Nice clean up job you are doing, with some paint should look like new again.
If you change both jaws it should correct the height diff. You know yours are the early versions as they have "closed" mounting holes. (Open on my new one. and still made in England)

What's my favorite store?? Hint.PAL

Looks good, Caper, hardly recognize it. Very cool vise, that one has some character.

I just cleaned up an old Columbian and resprayed it. I soaked it in Evaporust, scraped off the old paint, sanded it down some, and it came out very nice. :)

Well I don't love it but so far I have $5 and an hour labor into it.I figure if I can make a decent working vise out of it cheap, why not?

Sorry I did not mean to be sarcastic, It was not how it was meant. It is a steal of a deal for 5$ even if you spend 7$ on a nice can of High viability yellow to paint it with(Hint hint)

The new avatar is an old pic from when I used to do forestry work,Timberjack 610 porter.I ran it for a year at one point.Gained 4olbs that year so I gave it up.

Why not just replace both inserts so they match and live with the 1/4 taller? :headscrat

what spray did you use on it initially? to clean the gunk....

This gasket and paint remover we get from Bowman Distributers. It strips old paint like crazy, spray it on and give it about 1 minute and brush off the old paint. The pictures of the paint bubbling off the vise were taken as soon as I put the can down from spraying and picked up the camera.

Oven cleaner works well for clean up and paint removing if you have a hard time finding the industrial stuff. You can spray the object down you are trying to clean and then stick it in a trash bag to keep it from evaporating. Open the bag once a day and hit it with a wire brush, if it isn't clean enough spray it again and tie the bag up for another day.

Picked up an AM CO vise from Athol Mass model 93 for $40 today. It weighs 67 lbs. After partially cleaning it up noticed a crack at the rear anvil area. Hope this doesn't affect the integrity of this vise. I thought it could possibly be an Athol vise. See the photos.

Grind that out and hit it with a 316L stainless rod, or if you can a cast rod even better. It should never give you any more issues.

If you preheated and cooled it slow you might get away with a 7018.

So this is where the vise sits at this point.A new used set of jaws,a coat of paint and a stand welded up for it to sit on.Total investment is $5 for the vise and $5 for a can of paint, everything else was free.Should be good for a few years service.

Wow Caper, really nice job on that! When I first saw the pics it looked too rough and honestly, I didn't think it would turn out this good!
