I need a good way of organizing all my shovels, rakes, hoes, and axes and stuff. I get a landslide of tools just trying to get a rake. One problem is that they are all in a 10x12 metal shed. I am able to attach a 2x2 or 2x4 to the wall if needed. Please make suggestions before I hurt myself. Thanks.

Yeah. I did a search. Most of the hits are do you keep your stuff in the garage of a shed. What I want are ideas for separating shovel from rakes and being able to not have it all fall over when I take one out. I am thinking of building a large plywood box with dividers.

Ive had good luck with using a 55 Gal drum if your not too worried about making it pretty.

I'm currently using gladiators gear track and really like it. The hangers aren't cheap and they do add up though.

What I did in my wooden shed (but I'm sure it could work in a metal shed too) was to frame out some pegboard and hang the tools that way. I did more than frame the edges though so it would take a big more weight. 2 years and holding up fine.

Somebody like Rubbermaid makes an organizer similar to that.

I like those snap clips that grab the handle and hold the tool flush to the wall. A cheaper mount is to put two 6d to 8d nails up on the wall (or two by four in your case) to hang each tool.

I am thinking about making a 36" high knee wall out of 2x4's and drilling large holes on the top and bottom. Then I can insert the handles of the rake, broom, etc. down in there to make them stand up. Also, in between each rake, I would hang a shovel or anything else that wouldnt fit in the holes.

See what I'm trying to say?

I use some similar to this but designed to just mount to a flat wall...these are for slatwall I think. I got them at Home depot. I screwed them to exposed studs along my basement stairwell. each holds 4-6 rakes or shovels and with the business end up high all you have taking up space is the handles.

Currently, I have all my yard tools on about 4' of wall space. I say 'currently' because this is one of the 'before' photos. I am just now planning my garage redo and I am taking in all the great ideas that everyone has here at GJ. This system I have works great, but I think this looks a little cluttered and I want to move it to the opposite wall during the redo. It isn't as neat as I would like, but everything is readily accessible. The most I have to move is one or two tools to get what I need. Granted, the tool storage is not movable as others have noted is convenient, but everything has its place and its off the floor and off the workbench. (or shoudl be...) No 'Yard Tool Landslide' in this layout!

I got around most of the conflicts with getting to tools by hanging some with the heads up and the rake and brooms with heads down...

I mounted some spare 2x's to the block wall and used dowels and nails to hang the tools. I used 3/4" dowels (or mayber they were old rake or broom handles I cut down) to hang the heavy tools - shovels together, rake/hoes/pitch fork together, post hole digger on a single knub, pick and mattock heads separate from the handles. I used smaller dowels for the pruners the small hand tools and the hedge trimmer. I used nails for the rest or when I was too lazy to put in another dowel.

Here are a couple close ups...

The convenience of this system is that I can add or move dowels and add nails as I obtain more loot, I mean tools. The Stihl weedeater has been a recent addition as the dowels are not painted yet...

When I finally get around to relocate these tools, I plan on either adding another 2x at a lower level for more tools, or mabe use some spare 1x8's and cover the whole wall. I'm not convinced that this is the perfect solution, but all tools are visible and accessible. Maybe others at GJ have other ideas to help me improve... (I agree with Jack that these things don't go in the garage, but our dreaded HOA says differently)

Elkiebob, hope this gives you some possible ideas to solve your storage needs. Good Luck.

jeff

BTW, the OSB on the right was my hurricane shutters when the Triplets came through Florida in 2004 and is now intended for my attic floor. (Another project on the to-do list...)

I framed around the top of a box and made hangers inside and out.

I don't have to many multiple tools so mine fit around the inside of my shed. The cost was almost nill. Basically everything is hung on nails .(a few exceptions but...) I just juggled everything around until I found what fit around what best.
It was cheep, it was quick, it lets me see & get at everything quickly & easily.

Mines similiar to R6 Racer's. Ultra cheap and simple. I just screwed sheet metal screws half way into a scrap piece of 1"x2", and screwed that to the wall. Then I drilled holes in the yard tool handles, and made loops out of zip ties. The zip ties do ocassionally get in the way when I'm using the tool, so I need to change those out with short lengths of shoe string or leather.
