Re: Yea Old Garage

Sometimes ladders just fold themselves up. I climbed my 6-foot light duty aluminum ladder and leaned a little to the left to get leaves out of a gutter. The skinny front leg just folded under and I took a "drop and roll" trip to the ground. I was going to throw the ladder out but checked the new ones first. The new ones were flimsier than this one so I just screwed a plate over the cross-brace that folded. I have several ladders so this one is just a last-resort one that hangs on an outside wall of the workshop.

Back at the garage today,

This is the ceiling run by the big door 8x18 getting a wood board layer applied that lets the door open.

Nothing super special but making good progress.

Bob nice ladder repair!

Sub: all that insulation will really help next winter and if it's hot out you'll be happier if working in the garage because it will keep it cooler too.

looking good and nice work because it's not an easy or fun job, but a great improvement.

cheers

Re: Yea Old Garage

From way back on this post
http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=5271265&postcount=273

The start of my electric feed to the garage had to cut out some drywall and add conduit for the electric, well since the yearly garage sale is happening in 2 weeks I needed to get my drywall fixed up some,

First pic is of 1x1 bumper boards added to the studs then a 1x4 across the bottom for a joiner seam board.

Insulation stuffed back in and vapor barrier stapled back up.

Drywall put back up from where it came out of.

Couple of screws to hold them in place and it's done for now.

Now on to cleaning out the workshop area and making room for garage sale stuff!

Re: Yea Old Garage

Sub: I left mine open, but it has a fridge in front of it so only an occasional rat can get to mine. I like 1/2's idea of not mudding it and leaving it like it is so all you'll have to do is unscrew a few screws to put in another run later if needed.

WELL DONE

BTW it looks like you ate like a 400 pound guy last night and I didn't give you a ZZB over on our thread, but just saying it must have been some GOOD EATS. Also looks like you still have some energy to burn so maybe a quick run on the ATV's with the boys and your daughter today too??

cheers

1/2 and drives

for now it'll just be the screws exposed, later this summer I'd like to add a outdoor wood boiler and the entry point for the water lines will be next to the electric panel so I'll mess up the drywall then also so no point in making this super neat and finished up.

Just has to be somewhat neat!

Re: Yea Old Garage

Worked on more insulation again,

One layer of blue, one of pink then white on the bottom.

Working right next to the stove temp was 80 or better up next to the ceiling.
Was working in just a t shirt with outside temp in 40s

Need to get my wood supply burned up what I don't burn I'll have to move out of garage and restock and its all small rounds which are a big pain to stack.

Pic of the insulation being put up.

Re: Yea Old Garage

For my attic ladder I made up some rails so that the kids don't take a step and fall down the ladder hole.

Will insulate around all of this to help with heat loss, but that is a rainy day project, now with spring in the air there to much outside stuff to work on but here's aid of the rails and side insulation.

Sub: do you have to step over those rails? it might be a bit of a pain getting STUFF up and down so make one or both sides easy to remove. I could be looking at it wrong so you make the call.

just wanted say thanks again for all the support on the weight loss thread and GJ and even the ZZB's.

HAPPY EASTER

Re: Yea Old Garage

Drives your looking at the long side of the ladder,

Here's a pic of the entry point
Should make things a better to picture.
From last pic this is 3 steps forward and 2 steps right rotate and take pic of steps going down.
You can see the first step going down

This is the steps down before you could just walk right off the side and then your on 1st floor in a hurry and with 3 kids who like to play up in the attic just trying to make it a bit safer for them.

Anything that can come up the attic ladder hole should be able to get through this added railings and sideboard foam.
Also there is a window in the attic in front of garage for long boards and stuff to go in/out

Happy Easter to you as well drives

Rails are put in with screws give me 10 minutes and my good drill and I can have a side rail taken off if need be.

Of that 10 minutes 4 would be a zzb for you about weight loss!
Sorry could not resist :)

And the garage attic is only light storage,
My trusses are only 2x6 home made jobbers I have no idea the weight loading that they would take but dont wanna push my luck.

Heck there's really not much up there in storage,
Quick run down,
3 sets of atv tires, 2 with tires chains on for if needed for winter snow plowing,
Set of Chevy rally rims,
2 rear tires for the charger.
Maybe 3 16' 2x4
2 garage door openers and track
15 styrofoam strips 19"x95" 1.5 thick
1/2 roll of tar paper
Old ceiling fan from house that I'm gonna put in garage, it squeaks when fan running but will work fine In garage for me.
2 tires from my ford sport trac
Bunch more misc blue styrofoam 1/2 to 1/3 sheets in total less than 5 full sheets.
Pipe work frame for garage in a box.

There garage attic inventory if you wanted to know

If you make access difficult, it may be harder to make that decision to put stuff up there.

Captain, any thing that is able to fit up the attic opening will fit through the acces covering as well. If not it dosnt fit it would have been a problem to move around in the attic anyway.

I guess time will tell on this one!

Re: Yea Old Garage

Nothing much to report but wanted tp post up this pic of a old riding mower I sold on a garage sale this weekend.

It's nothing special just a 7hp MTD lawn flite

Got it from my folks who got it from my grandparents, I used it in my youth to mow my parents yard it was way better than the push mower that I had to use before this.

When I bought my first house it had not ran in 5 years I gave some fresh gas a new plug and 5 pulls on the cord and drove it 5 blocks across town to my new house.
Mowed grass there for 8 years. At my current house it only filled in once first year I was here for mowing duty. It hasn't ran in 4 years and i have only moved it from 1 side of atv shop to other or to garage and stacked stuff on top of it.

I both have loved this mower and cursed it when it won't start!
Old fashion pull start, it's okay if your running by the 3rd pull but gets real frustrating when your at 15-20 pulls.

Last year I mowed grass in town I had a small hill that I had to mow in 1st as it didn't have the power to go in 2nd was only a 3 speed 3rd was fun in my youth to race around the yard!

Used this mower to pull small wagon full of wood when I was young as well!

I guess good bye my friend may you have a nice new home and somebody to tune you up good!

Re: Yea Old Garage

Back on the insulation again today I want to get the part above where the door runs done up so that if my batts hang down that the door dosnt catch the batt and pull it out.

Temp is mid 30s but after a hour with the wood stove going I'm down to just my long sleeve t shirt and garage is at 70 or so that's nice!

Any way working with some bigger sheets and how to get the batts to stay up and in place so that I can put up a sheet!

Hmm?

Enter in empty bird feed bag and just staple that in place for temp holding and its thin enough that I'll just cover it up! Couple of thin plywood stips to cheat in the edge and away I go!

Pic of the bird feed bag stapled up for holding!

I gotta pretty up the boards going left/right on the edges yet but the up/down long boards are there to stay!

Thanks for viewing!

Thanks for the kudos 1/2 cup!
Very nice of you to say!

I'm to the point in the insulation project I had to get the car moved over to the other side of the garage to keep going on the insulation project so now this is my view from my chair next to the wood stove!

There's much worse things to have to look at!

Re: Yea Old Garage

Got the last part on the insulation done over the garage door today, and the last run of the loose bats is also done!

Still have more to go to get the ceiling how I want it but for now that will go to rainy day projects, or summer super hot days, I can work in in the shade on this.

Also made use of my mini rock wall as a ramp to off load my Atv snowblower.

Just some 2x4 and a little bridge from wall to trailer and unhook the blower and down the road the blower goes! Gotta love Craig's list!
The snowblower is now at it's new home and I have some extra spending money!

Just been busy haven't had many updates but did get today to work on the garage!

Got my winter goals done! Somewhat I guess!
To bad it's almost late spring when I finished.

I'm guessing the insulation will make it a little more tolerable in the garage this summer. And as for the late spring, I'd consider that a huge win. I'm lucky if I finish a year after expect to complete a project.

Re: Yea Old Garage

Xtremek,

this garage build is going on year 4 I think:dunno:
though I suppose they never really get done just fine tuned every so often.

Garage is pretty good in summer time with having a door on both ends if I open them both up I can get a breeze going through the garage which helps a lot and also just not being in direct sunlight when the temp is 85Plus is a huge help and if all that fails there is a AC unit I have in the wall just need to run the wiring for which will be the first Hot day task I'll work on.

was at the local car show swapmeet 2 weeks ago in Jefferson WI and wife took this pic of me.

for some reason this truck caught my eye!

sorry you guys gotta put up with me in the pic!

Re: Yea Old Garage

Sub: sorry it's been too long since I posted on your thread. you are making great progress and the spring cleaning sounds like it might have brought in a few bucks to pay for more supplies for the garage or maybe some CHEESEBURGERS.

in any case you are doing great and just keep taking those little steps to complete a HUGE TASK like a garage makeover and you'll eventually get there just like you have when you decided to shed a few pounds.

I like the truck and since you like that bright green you might also like the color TRIJEFF paints his vises. sorry I don't have pictures of his cool Wilton vises painted that bright green but he just posted one a few days ago on the big vise thread so you can take a look there when you have time.

I bet that picture of you last year might have been a bit different. you are looking pretty fit sir and cool looking truck.

cheers

I'll go along with Drives. They say the camera adds 10 lbs to you. If that's true, you look like you need to go eat a sandwich. You certainly are looking fit Sub. Oh, and I'll abstain from any comment on the color of the truck. But it looks like a nice truck nonetheless.

Sub: I might have given it a couple squirts of Kroil, but love the method you picked to pull out the rusty hitch. i'm guessing you've had to do something like that before or seen it done? or was that a first?

cheers and any plans for the garage for the weekend or are kid's games and stuff starting to take more of your time?

Re: Yea Old Garage

Drives, on the hitch removal this was reversion 2 as the angle iron brace and pry and pray it works first attempt did not work.

Any way I'm on to getting some soffit added to make the garage look better.

Like most things I due this is getting done now to try and save me time on another project in the furture.

Cliff notes is wife wanted a camper so we now have 27' wildwood camper sitting in the yard next to the house.

I'm the type of guy that doesn't like to leave things sitting out side so I have rough plan to make a shed for said camper. Have spot picked out for shed. Have been clearing brush/burning stumps out in shed area and there are some big rocks and small rocks that need moved from shed location.

The rocks will make me a great fire break wall next to yea old garage!
But I don't want to have to fight the rock wall dance with ladder to put soffit up.
Will have to on lower side since rock wall already there.

So in order to get area cleared for camper shed I have to get soffit on garage!
If I need to break that down better just let me know.

Here's a pic of 78 ford and the soffit materials
several of big rocks that I'll have to move out of my way they came from camper shed clearing. I just don't wanna move. The rocks out of my way only to move them where I want them In my fire break wall a year later.

Moving on got 4 more sections of soffit up,

I have to measure each one though so that takes time
my walls not laser straight so it's check each one as you go.

Sorry this picture is a little dark as I'm working the shade side of garage!

It's a lot nicer working in the shade when temp is above 80

Re: Yea Old Garage

Thanks 1/2 cup for your comments!

Heck I was multi tasking working today,

Had 3 fires going on stump removal duty as well. Work for a while then walk over and check the fires add some wood or turn the coals over if needed.
Or add in some good old stump removal accerlant "used engine oil" every now and then as well which heats the fire back up. In each of my stumps that are getting burned out I plunged cut the chain saw bar 16" straight down. I used my 20$ garage sale special saw a ancient sthil 170. It's a beater but works good for trash jobs like stump cutting instead of risking either of my better saws. The stump cutting is hard on the bar and chain it did a lot of kicking back trying to get the cut in.

Any way I just dump the good stuff down the seam cut in the middle of the stump to try and get the heart to burn out of it.
Pic of my 3 stump fire.
Closet stump has had 4 days of burning and is now burnt out and gone.
Yanked the last roots out with atv 2 hours after this pic.

Middle is on 2 day of burning and had live shooter spike so it's holding tough yet,
Will have to dig out around in morning and hoping maybe 2 or 3 more burns will get it gone.

Last stump has the fire ring around it and it is the biggest of the 3 and it got its first day burn in today and already the plung cut of it got burned out so it might burn out pretty easy. Then again maybe not.

Pics of my 3 stumps a burning
