How do they rank in the power tool world? I had my misgivings when I bought my first one, being that DeWalt is owned by Black and Decker, thinking that they were nothing more than repainted Black and Decker 'quality', but I have been pleasantly surprised with my 4 1/2" angle grinder, 3/8" drill motor, and my most recent aquisition, a variable speed jigsaw.

we have dewalt 4 1/2 inch angle grinders in my welding class. half are older (4 or 5 years) and half are brand new (1 year or less). there's a small difference in apperance. the new ones have a squareish gear box and the older ones are more round. personaly, i hate the new ones. they're nosier and vibrate real bad. your hands will go numb after using them for any length of time. its not the grinding disks, they all have the same disks. some even have wire brushes.

the older ones are quieter and much smoother operating. i don't know why.

FWIW I work with a guy who used to work for B&D, and I asked him about the internal differences between the B&D and DeWalt brands. According to him, the DeWalts do use much better components, and have tighter tolerances, etc. Some specifics he mentioned were that the DeWalts use actual bearings in places that B&D would use bushings, and that the gears and gear cases were higher-quality metal on DeWalt vs. die-cast or even plastic on B&D.

some people on gj don't like them but i have had good luck with mine i have dewalt corded grinders, circle saw and miter sawand about 10 18 volt tools. i have had no major issues with anything. a chuck on a drill and a switch on an impact wrench after a mower deck fell on it. i do not think that was the tools fault.

comparing dewalt and black and decker is like comparing stanley and mac or williams and snap on......regardless of who owns dewalt, they are still their own line.... my only bad expierence with dewalt has been their 18 volt batteries.... the tools themselves were fine.... by the time batteries wore out, was almost cheaper to by a replacement set...

i have dewalt stuff . i like the circular saw i have had it for about 8 years now and it is just starting to have problems. i think the jig saws they make are junk . i have 2 of them both broken and replaced with a bosch. the grinders are also junk burnt one up in a week replaced with a metabo. i have 3 12 volt drills they still work fine but all the batteries dont replaced with milwaukee not much better. 2 dewalt miter saws they are nice saws. a dewalt table saw i like that alot i have made cabinets with it. dewalt sawsall would not buy another will soon replace with a milwaukee. a dewalt sander it seems to be holding up fine. keep in mind i am a carpenter and use these tools daily . for the homeowner these tools are great.
