I'm on the hunt for a larger box, currently I have an old school Snap On, not sure of the model. Found a couple that I may be interested in, looking for a little help on pricing since I don't really know used values on these boxes.

http://norfolk.craigslist.org/tls/1527255356.html
This is a nice Macsimizer but the guy doesn't give a price and is looking for reasonable offers. What does a box like this go for used? Not looking to price in the air tools he has with it.

http://norfolk.craigslist.org/tls/1516044016.html
Snap on KRL Series $1600. reasonable deal?

http://richmond.craigslist.org/tls/1525978225.html
Snap on limited edition hod rod $2500
Not sure I can tell much about this box from the pic. Looks like alot of box for the $, but may be a little rough looking, what do you think?

Thanks for any input,
Mike

The MAC box would easily be my first choice and it's worth at least $1500/ IMO.

Thanks for the input. I sent an email to the guy 2 days ago have not heard back. Moving on.

I found a KRL 7022 that is 3 years old with light use. Drawer liners and top mat included. (no SS top) Pics look good, have not talked the guy yet. He is asking $2100 for the box. This sounds reasonable to me; what do you tool box pros think? Just want to make sure we are in the ball park before I contact.

Thanks, Mike

Mike, can you post a pic of the box you have, so we can compare it to what you want to get?

FWIW, I like the blue Mac in the first ad. I'd offer him a grand and see what he says. But try and get a phone number and talk to him on the phone rather than sending an email offer...if you're still interested. The second link is no good.

67,
I like the MAC as well. I did not make an offer in my email on the MAC, people don't take you serious when you make an offer site unseen. I was just trying to get him to contact me since he did not provide a number to reach him. So I started looking again and ran across the KRL, it is very nice as well. I'm not in a postion to get a pic of my box, but it looks much like this one
http://greensboro.craigslist.org/tls/1548759146.html
Edit: Just got home an looked at the model numbers of my boxes; my top box is a 1984 KRA 59f and the bottom is a KRA380C

By the way I have a 64 390 galaxie in my shop, belongs to my boy. He bought it 14 years ago when he was 16. He is gone but I cant get his car to follow him. :lol_hitti
Thanks, mike

Still looking for several opinions from the tool box pros on this KRL 7022 box. 3 years old, looks to be lightly used and in good shape. Asking price is $2100 firm, is this in the ball park for this box? Price sounds reasonable to me but I do not keep up with box pricing; it's a little bit of a drive, I don't want to roadtrip if this price is not in the ball park since he is firm on the price.
Thanks, Mike

I think I would jump on it at $1900, if it is as good as he describes, like you say show him the $$$ and he may go with it. I will call him later and see if he can send some better quality pics before I drive 200mi.

As far as the Mac in the first post I sent another email, we will see if he responds, I really like that box, and it is very close by.
Thanks, Mike

Thats a nice box for 2100. Well worth it in my opinion. Remember its a buyers market. Boxes come up for sale all the time.

The KRL 7022 sells for over $6800.00 new, so I would say that 2100 is a very good price.
That is about 31% of new before you add in the tax.

I agree, $2100 is a fair price if the box is in excellent condition. (everything as it should, minimum scratches, no dents, drawer liners undamaged and clean, casters roll as they should, brakes work, etc.)

I've got a Macsimizer like the one shown (except black and no stainless top).

You'd be robbing the guy at $1500....I'd say $2500 is even reasonable, assuming it's in as good of condition as it looks.

It also has more storage capacity than the Snap On you show.

Thanks guys, I called on the Snap-on box and he sold it. I wish the guy with the MAC would contact me. I really like that box. I thought $1500 for the MAC might be low. Found another Macsimizer top and bottom for sale. 6yrs old though, the guy is sending more pics, we will see. May be more 'used; then I'm looking for:lol_hitti In the mean time, I will keep looking.

Thanks again
Mike

Now you know what a good price point is for that box. As others have said, boxes come up for sale all the time, and you have a big advantage being a cash buyer.

I talked to a guy tonight on a Classic 78, I know it's not in the same league as the KRL or Macsimizer but I think I can get it for about 1800. Says it is 1.5 years old and he has never put any tools in it, got it in a trade. Black with the SS top. Anyway he says the guy that he got it from dropped one drawer and bent a slide. He stated that SO would cover this under warranty and give you a new slide. Is that the case? If not, how much to replace a slide on a classic 78? :headscrat Going to look at it Sunday and see what kinda shape it's in. Found another Classic 78 brand new, never used looking for offers, going to call on it tomorrow.
Thanks, Mike

I looked at the classic 78 the other day, it was not exactly as described. Anyway, I've come across a 3 year old black KRL1033 with SS top and a KRWL5325 small 54" hutch / riser. Don't really care for the small hutch. I can't find the hutch on the SO site. I do like the SS top and two full length top drawers. I talked to the guy this am, sounds like it is in good shape. Thinking about taking the road trip to check it out. I would like some opinions on the value of the box. He is asking $4500, I'm looking for what the tool box pro's here think is a fair price for both or minus the hutch. Thinking I might try to make an offer without the hutch, prob won't do it but can't hurt to ask. (no holes drilled to mount the hutch)
Thanks again, Mike

Snap-On may or may not but it is a routine replacement item and they might just spring for it. The drawer part of the slide is just a piece of metal, the box part is the important part with all the bearings, but they may only come as a set.

You've made a quantum leap in price/budget.

The thing I learned after my box buying experience:

Wait for the box you want at the price you want to pay, and the only way you can tell if a price is realistic is to watch and keep track of offerings.

Thanks Glen, After looking at that classic I think I decided that a KRL may be the way to go. I know I jumped in price, I dont want to spend more then I have to but the KRA classic was not as heavy duty as I thought they would be. Good advice though, I should read and heed  Mike

I was surprised to read that KRA's are not made in the USA, only KRL's.

Great that you got to go see one. Regardless of all the stuff you can read, this absolutely has to be done so you can zero in on a model. My impresion is that the KRAs are pretty basic, the Classic a bit nicer, but the KRLs is when it gets serious. Nothing better than to see it in person and work the drawers when they are fully loaded. Go to see local boxes of other makes so you dispense with any nagging doubts. I originally had the hots for a Matco Rat Fink box, and although it was a perfectly fine box, it is an entry level 4 series so not fair to compare with a KRL. The money was the same though!

I did some reading on the Matco's after a couple popped up on CL. Then I called on a roller with hutch for $4500. I thought that maybe it might be a 5s or 6s, called and it was a 4s, no thanks. I'm all over the place on this box hunt.:headscrat. I love the KRL's as well as the Macsimizer, I found a brand new black Macsimizer tonight on CL, going to look at it tomorrow evening. A little less box and money then the KRL1033 and probably comes closer to my needs then that KRL:drool:. So if this deal pans out I will roll a macsimizer into the shop and roll my old school KRA out to CL.
Thanks again,
Mike

be patient. after a month or so of looking I just picked up a really nice KRL722 with the SS top for $1500. I found it on Craigs list, but it was actually at a pawn shop. They had been asking 3000, but decided it had been around for too long and marked it half price.

They also had a Mac Tech 1000 and a couple KRA box's there. It was nice to be able to see all them in one spot to really see and feel the differences. The KRL really did feel like a higher class of box.

Around here I've seen nice MACs going for $1500.00 to $2400.00. The tooll guys have had similar boxes priced at $2700.00 to $2900.00...MAC, Cornwel and MATCO.

Last summer I missed an almost new MAC 56" for $1500.00.

Man, up around Mn and Wi you guys are getting great pricing on boxes. I have not seen anything that I would want in that price range except that first KRL in this thread for $2100; just a little to late to get that one. All the boxes in Va / NC area that I have had interest in were all over 3k. Heck I saw a Macsimizer in Northern Va tonight that was 3 years old and they were asking $6500, good luck on that one.:headscrat I think the Macsimizer MB1350 is a good compromise between the Classics and the KRL's. Question, why does Mac not have the tool box specs on the page with the box, or anywhere else on their site that I can find? Or do they? :headscrat Snap-On has everything right there, the way it should be.

I have complained to my MAC guy about their whole website. IT *****. He says that it is being totally revamped and will take a long time to repair. I want to throw my computer on the floor and set it on fire every time I try to find info on that site.

The Mac site does ****, but it is great if you want to look at pretty pictures. :lol_hitti

I finally solved my problem last night. Now I don't have to feel like my woman in a dress shop saying, I like that one, no that one etc...
I ended up with the Mac super station MB 1350 in black. Never been used, rolled from the Mac truck to the PO's home garage and never used it. I really like it, lots of room, more then I really need but, I just didn't like the drawers on the Classic.

congradulations on the purchase. That is like the one that I use at work and I love it.

Thanks, It was a road trip to get and was a little bit of an adventure. On my way to pick up the box I passed a house and noticed a guy working on a saturn up close to his house. A closer look brought a big grin to my face. This guy was pulling the motor out of this old car, had the hood off, car jacked up high in the front. He had some type of craddle tripod rig with an 3' I beam sitting in it stretched over the motor bay into an open window on the house. He was using the window jamb to support the other side of the I beam and had the motor swinging from the beam. It was funny as heck. I guess you got to do what you got to do. If I was not on a mission I would have turned around to take a pic. :lol_hitti
I started moving my tools from the old snap on over to the new box, got to get some more wrench and socket organizers to complete the job. Should get many years out of this box.

Nice box. Identical to mine except mine has the molding that goes all the way across the top drawer.

Problem with mine? It's full.
