Greetings gents, from SC.

I am just putting the finishing touches on a new garage and have run into a little problemo.

I built a freight lift to go into the attic (because of laziness and, shall we say.... the gravitational effects of too much pizza and beer over the years ), and have hit a bit of a snag.

I have a pulley that takes most of the weight of the system and the bearing seems to be wearing very quickly. In fact it ejects a fine black powder with use. I'm going to lube it with high pressure grease, but I'm afraid there may be damage already.

I need a cable pulley rated at about 1000 lbs but cannot seem to find one on the entrawebs.

Anyone know a source for good quality pullies?

I'll get some pics this evening or tomorrow, i just finished the lift yesterday.

Here's a pic of the rough 4x6 hole (in the ceiling) the lift goes thru and a pic of the new garage taken in Feb about 90% finished.

Lift is 4x6 feet.

My daughter was tentatively running it for my video session; her first time so a lot of stops and starts.

I used garage door rails for the tracks, cable and a bunch of pulleys hooked to a 1800lb winch in the attic.

Do you stand on the lift to get to the attic, or is it just the stuff going in there? Very nice garage. Winches are not supposed to lift objects, pulling only, are you using a winch from a 4X4 vehicle?

I guess I should have said "hoist" rather than winch. It is similar to this one but rated a bit higher:

I would never ride it. I left the controller short so I'd never be tempted. You load it up, walk up the stairs (empty handed, woohoo!) and run it from above.

Because I would prefer not to be a comical subject featured in the many entraweb forum threads entitled "Darwin Awards".

Our latest recipient of the coveted Darwin Awards goes to Mr. Handel D. Wormwood of Cowpens SC.

It seems Mr Wormwood cobbled together a freight lift for use in his garage.

Despite explicit warnings on every component of the system, including the hoist, pulleys, cable, shackles and eye bolts that stated "not for use lifting humans or animals", Mr. Wormwood decided to ride the lift.

It appears that 2 cables broke, allowing Mr. Wormwood to fall >12 feet and be impaled on a large plastic bowling trophy which he was, inexplicably, bringing DOWN from the attic.

Lawton Meeks, the county coroner, estimates the time from the accident to Mr. Wormwood's final demise at 1 hour 10 minutes judged by the time stamps on Mr. Wormwood's cell phone, upon which, due to his dyslexia, Mr. Wormwood repeatedly dialed 119...119...119...119...

Mrs. Themla Wormwood, wife for 37 years and recent widow said "That Handy was always making stuff. I knowed he was gonna kill hisself, I'm just surprised it took this long."
