I lined the drawers with "Elephant Bark" 3/16 rubber floormat, about $200 worth off Amazon, kind of pricey but gives a nice solid feel to the drawers and better than spray-on bedliner because it can be easily removed and cleaned. You'd be amazed at how much it takes. Here it is, the finished project. I cut down a handle off an Epiq box that I snagged on Fleabay for $45 because I couldn't find the center piece for the original handle. The KR290 happened to have factory 1/4-20 holes that matched the Epiq handle's hole spacing. Time to load this one up with tools and start on the top-box!

Wow, better than new!

Nothing beats the feeling of a resto job you've completed yourself.

Congrats and may it serve a lifetime.

Hi

What a great result! I'm starting the same process with my KRL722 in two weeks. I have two quick questions, where did you get the casters? How did you get the little plastic lock slides out from under the drawers?

Thanks for your help

Thanks, I'm loving using this, organized tools, silky drawer action, its great! I got the casters off fleabay for around $55. They work great and i have not had any issues with flat spots. I'll see if I can dig up the link. Also my 660 does not have any plastic drawer catches but my top box does. They come out pretty easy. I wound up getting a different top box than the -61 because I needed more space and I was pressed for time, more later. Good luck!

This thread inspired me to have a go at restoring my KRL 722 which I purchased used and scratched! Nothing major but it was showing a lot of use and wear so I thought a decent coat of paint would spruce it up a bit. Here it is mid project and completed. I just finished it Thursday.

Yesterday I found an bought a KRL 791 to go on top, again used and sadly in white - you can't be too picky when looking for a top box by itself. I'm considering a color change next holiday season on the top box. Knowing myself (OCD as others admit too in another thread) I'd have to paint the inside too.

So what says the collective, go with the Blues Brothers look (White over Black) or paint the top box to match? Is painting the inside too OCD even for us?

Would love your opinions!

Hey that looks awesome! Nice job. I say go all the way on the top box to match. Sure you will question your sanity midway through but I guarantee you that when you are done you will not regret it. I would scuff the white real good with some 320, work out any dents, seal it up with some good epoxy primer and go from there. Once you are done you will have a box that will last a lifetime and you can pass down for generations. Trust me it's worth the effort. Good luck!

Thanks! I'm quite pleased with it and probably wouldn't have tried without this thread and forum.
Black on black will be next winter's project.
Thanks again

Latest update, Just picked up another KR290 to hang on the other end. It's mint condition but since I already committed to Viper Red on the other boxes, This one will have to be painted too. Something to consider when you pick a color for a box restoration. More later.

I'm just cleaning this up, beating the dents out, and buffing the paint back to a shine. My question is, where can I get a replacement handle for the kr-59 lid?

What production year and whats hole spacing? Looks like it might be a rounded "tin covered" vintage handle?

The 4" hole center "square" handles I think you can still get from Snap On.

The old rounded 2 3/4 hole spacing "sheet metal covered" handles are harder to find. I think they are Amerock #2804-6993 handles, hard to find and not cheap if you find NOS ones. There's some on Fleabay for like $20+ each right now. I found a real close alternative for about $7 each, Modern Standards 20926. Here's a pic of a factory 60's/70's handle and the Modern Standards side by side, note that the factory handle has been bashed a bit....:

So 5 years and 2 out of state moves later, I finally am getting around to restoring and hanging the other KR-290. I gave up on finding a KR-690/691 Top box and decided to get a U.S. general 72” top box. I need the extra length of 2 KR-290’s to get me to 82” on the bottom. Unfortunately I found that my kirker viper red urethane had dried out and I wasn’t keen on paying $135 for another gallon for such a small job. Local Napa parts store wanted $195 to mix up a quart. On to plan b…. I found that rustoleum Cherry Gloss Red is almost a dead nuts match. If you look close you can see it’s slightly brighter. 2nd 290 is almost done, I’ll post pix when everything is all stacked up.

Nice work, HarrisFD.

How’s your hand doing after all this time? That was a nasty injury.
