Started out in the morning with my meeting with the building inspector here at my place. Weds I went into town and applied for the building permit for my new 30x40 garage. Here in TN they come to your house & issue the permit after looking over your lot. He looked at the location I had picked out & said "yep, it's at least 50' from the road & 5' from the neighbors property", "here's your permit". Then we spent the next half hour shooting the bull and not much else. When I mentioned how easy it was compared to the last building permit I applied for when I lived in NH he laughed and told me a funny story. A couple months ago he had a woman from CA show up at his office wanting to apply for a permit to build a small addition on the back of her house. She proceded to tell him she was on a tight budget and needed to know exactly what it all was going to cost. "Envirinmental impact study", "wetlands study", rules pertaining to getting approval from the neighbors, and on and on.... She then told him she hoped it wouldn't cost more than 12k for all the red tape because that was all she had set aside for permits. He asked her if she needed to modify her current septic system as part of the construction and she told him it did not. He then told her the permit was $50. That there was no requirement for any silly "studies", permission from the neighbors, or any other silly ****. She refused to believe him and demanded to talk to his boss... He explained to her that he IS the boss and the building inspector, and the permit guy, the zoning guy, and probably the dog catcher as well.. As the home owner I am allowed to act as the contractor, do my own electrical, change or modify the plan as needed, etc. The inspector needs to come back just prior to setting the posts (building a pole barn) and again when the building is finished. That's it. DONE. Damn I love living in a place where common sense is still fairly common. After he left here I decided to check out the recent craigslist ads and scored this cabinet for $60. No key so I had to run to Home Depot for a $5 lock. A little cleaning & maybe touch up the white paint and I have another cabinet for my new garage. I already have a pair of large NAPA parts cabinets and am looking for more old school gas & oil type cabinets to use. My basement is overflowing with all my garage stuff. Now I guess it's time to actually build the garage.

Your problem is that in a couple of years the lady from California will be at the local city council proposing that you change all of your laws to the way they were in California.

When you hear them start out a sentence with: Well the way we used to do this in California...

It has gotten so bad in Nevada that some of the locals have bumper stickers that say: "We Don't Care How You Did It In California!"

NC is pretty easy on permits as well. I am building my garage with only the need for an electical permit. I found the "Farm Building" loop hole. As far as the county knows I am building a tractor/equipment storage shed.

Just need to be sure the tractor is in it when I have my final electrical inspection.

Yeah it's part of the reason I moved from New Hampshire last year. I lived there most of my life (56 years old) but it's NOT the NH I grew up in. The last time I spoke to the town administrator in my old hometown I asked him when the state was going to change the name to Northern Massachusetts...

Hey, I am not sure where you heard all that cr@p about the rules in California, but they are not so bad!

I would prove to you they are not so bad, however I don't have time right now because I need to swing by and get my permit to eat dinner tonight and then see the planning commission about planning on seeing a movie with my wife oh and see about a parking permit to park in the theater parking lot.

LoL.. What "city council" ? I live in an unincorporated town. There is no city government, no police, no mayor, no town hall, volunteer fire department. I had to go to the county to get the building permit and that's a 40 minute drive. If there's ever an issue requiring a cop that can't be handled personally we call the county sheriff & he'll be along sometime or other. If it's a real emergency it would probably be faster to call the State Police. I have lived in the city in another lifetime and I wouldn't go back to that life for all the money in the world.

Cool build, but why so many doors and windows?
