hi all - so this is what i "ate" yesterday for lunch...a box of taps...have never tapped a hole in my life, but hope to - saw this locally on craigslist for a $100 - negotiated and got nowhere, so paid the guy the $100 - what have I gotten? - bunch of junk? - some good stuff? - was it a deal...or junkfood that will give me indigestion and good lesson learned (as in do your homework and don't lead with your gut)

it is hard to see from these pics - most of these taps are "R&N HSG" - some are "Vermont" - the drill bits are "SKF - Sweden" and a few others - but overwhelmings R&N HSG - what do you think? - thanks, ed

If that really is a 9/16-24 tap (and not misstamped) you've got huge hands. On my screen that measures 3 1/4" accross the flats and the center hole is about 1/2".

Generally speaking though, if you needed 3 or 4 of those 1" taps, you'd have spent the $100 and more.

I think that was a 3/16" die, but yes it looks as though he did well for himself.

It looks like you got some NPT taps in that lot. I recently tried finding a 1/2" NPT tap locally, and found there aren't any. If you have 3/8", 1/2" and 3/4" NPT in that box, your $100 is covered.

I have all three of those size taps, but since when were they considered an endangered species? If they are that high I would gladly part with mine for half that! :wtf:

None available locally here. The goons at HD didn't even know what I was talking about.

One guy kept looking for a "tapper". He probably had a few of those in stock at home.

That collection would have brought more at one of my auctions, so I think you did good!

I have all 3, and they are available at True Value or Ace Hardware for about $8.00 - $12.00 each.... Unless the US plumbing market goes metric, I don't see them becoming extinct in the near future. Quality might suffer if they start coming from China, but I doubt that there is enough of a market for China to start making them for the US Market....
