Estate saling this weekend I ran across this three foot gem. I had a H in a shield that I couldn't find on Alloy Artifacts. It also had a railroad stamp on it. Thinking I had some rare ($5) wrench I traced it down to be a Hubbard. They seem to be defunct now but appear to have been a pretty large company catering to the railroads.

Not the first time I thought I had something unusual only to find a niche company well known in a specific industry.

Hi Elidas,

Believe it or not, we have had another Hubbard tool on GJ. When Hubbard of Pittsburgh bought Beall of Illinois, another major old RR and farm tool supplier, they inherited the SPEEDEE-RATCH, shown below. It was quite a departure for both of them! More info in my SPEEDEE-RATCH thread, linked here.

I use to come across old Hubbard RR tools quite a bit. I have an old sledge laying around here somewhere. Every time I ran across one of those large DOE wrenches the seller seemed to think they were worth $100 or so. Every once in awhile one will pop up on ebay ID'd as Herbrand by someone who saw the "H", ignored the shield vs. Diamond and couldn't be bothered to do more than an AA search.
