the end that would be whacked doesn't look like it was meant to be hammered on? maybe a nonmetallic hammer?

I think it was originally a dead center for a lathe before someone started beating on it.

thanks bill, you got it. found some pics of what this 1 would have looked like before wearing out.

I don't know what it is, but I'm pretty sure it isn't a lathe center.

hi, the bit i found in google images is called a "plum blossom thimble bit". the design/shape at the end does resemble the 1 i have, this 1 being quite worn?

Tubular Rivet Setter/Splash Tool

Available in one size only - OK, we get it, the photo on the right makes it look like we have two sizes - we don't - one size only. It's a weird photo thing!
Our new batch of these is 4-1/4" long and it's tapered at the business end, from a 9/16" shank diameter down to 3/8" at the setting end - fits in tight spots!
Rivet Setting Tool for use with post rivets or tubular rivets (not for use with brass two-part rapid rivets - scroll down a bit for that tool).
Punch a hole in the leather, put the post rivet through, put the pin end of this tool in the throat of the rivet, give it a good whack with the mallet, and the
end of the rivet splits into six flower petal sort of things, holds the leather quite well. These setting tools are hardened steel and have a long life span -
to make them last you MUST use a nylon or rawhide mallet - NEVER USE A STEEL HAMMER - and a cutting board/pounding pad. $16 each, USA shipping included.
Rivet Setter for Post or Tubular Rivets - RS0302 -

EDIT: the center pin on yours appears to have been beaten flat

thanks mint, looks like that's it. when you're digging through a box you just never know what they held onto?
