Yet Another Whatzit

I picked this up last weekend partly to find out what it is for.

I'm pretty sure its for aligning two pieces in the Vee's and adjusting them, possibly for a gap. The hex nut above the Vee's is likely to hols a scale but not a std 1/2 or 3/4" wide common steel scale.

But what was it's specific use?

One odd bit about this: No obvious way to clamp anything into the Vees...

I've used something similar on a shadow graph machine , used to measure run out on small shafts etc,
Shadow graphs were large optical magnifiers , looked a bit like a sonar display.
