I have never see much posted on the Yost 3D & 6D drill press vises, they look pretty good, made in USA, but the bit slot looks a little narrow for larger bits. Are they in the same league as the Yost industrial line of bench vises and how do they compare to Palmgren and Wilton drill press/mill vises?

Drill press vises come in all different configurations, each slightly different to best suite the task at hand, machine, size and operator preference. Those two Yosts are "general purpose" drill press vises, not bad but a compromise of a few designs.

If clearance through the bottom of the vise is your main concern, check out one of the Heinrich or copy quick drill press vises. Those will give you the most clearance. Although you really should be using parallels or the like to allow for space on the back side of your work piece. The rod slide quick release vises have a jaw shelf to keep the work off the bottom of the vise.
