Hey guys new here, just wondered if any of you had any information on this yost vise I just picked up. There is no model number on it but says it was made in Muskegon Michigan, it is a 4-in vise. Looks like somebody tried to paint it. All I could find online was that it was made between 1950 and 1980. I probably paid too much for it but I am a sucker for old vines. Thanks for any info

It's an older Yost 204. 46-56 years old.

Yes they are Fantastic. Very well built Industrial bench vises. Yost moved to Muskegon MI in 1950
They moved again in 1980 and the castings noted this. So yours is probably way older than what I stated.

By 1974 they already had the anvil on the back of the static jaw and cramped ends on the crank handle. Mine was delivered in June of 1974. Note anvil and mine has crimped ends on handle .

You could probably find a swivel base for yours on ebay.

This is exactly the kind of information I was looking for, thank you very much! I never knew I could get a swivel base for it. That is the one thing I didn't like about this vise. It is definitely heavy!

Let's see the bottom of it.

Here is a pic of the bottom of the Yost, and a pic of my Morgan Chicago 4 inch swivel base I recently rescued. I like finding these old vices, they don't make them like they used to. Is there a way to get the newer paint off of the Yost to expose the original paint? Probably not but figured I would ask. Any idea what the original color is on the Yost?

Rustoleum midnight ink blue is a good close color to the Yost original color. Mine is painted bright orange so I would quit running into it at work lol!

My 1974 204 has a bolt spacing of 4- 5/8".
I'd call Eastwood and talk to a tech line guy and see if you cannot find a base for the bolt spacing you have. 20241206_100900.jpg

Thank you for the measurements 👍, I will check that out when I get home. Sure would be nice to find a old original swivel base but I'm sure that would be like hitting the lottery lol

There's 2 on ebay. Both do not have the center bolt or the lockdown bolts and handles.

A newer 204 or 104 swivel should work and they still have the old timey look to them and are very substantial in build. This is a 2024 production yost 204 I just got. They are made in Taiwan now but they are every bit as well built as the US made ones.

I'd still try and see if eastwood has any replacement bases for the 204 and see if it can be had with the lockdown hardware. I can get measurements off mine tonight if needed. But if the bolt pattern is the same it will work and look the part on your vise.

My bolt holes seem to be more like 4 and 3/4 in. I asked the guy on eBay with the swivel base to send me some measurements. Are you pretty positive this is a 204? I checked out Eastwood's website but wasn't able to come up with anything, I'll have to give them a call on Monday. I have looked all over the internet and can't seem to find much information. Mine seems to have a y stamped in the casting on the left side instead of of the word "Yost" which I can't seem to find on the internet either. Got cleaned and lubed up last night, now it cranks smooth as butter 😁17336643443175491679859667774306.jpg

Don't the newer 204s have geared bases?
I'm really not sure. I was looking at some pictures earlier of either a yost or a reed that was pretty old and it had what looked like a geared base

Is there another forum on garage journal for vise parts? I've seen it mentioned a couple times but I can't seem to find it
