I was intending to hop on the googler and find a recommended workbench vise from a box store. Skip ahead 10 minutes and im deep into the vintage vise discussions here. Skip ahead another day or so and I'm the proud owner of two vintage vises... You all **** for getting me into this.

I paid $75 each. Not a great deal, but they both function and a new Menards 4" vise is $60. Seems like most people have a general idea about value when selling old vises. I didn't see any $25 specials.

The $50 to $90 Menards/HomeDepot/Lowes vises are Chinee cast iron... the jaw inserts are held in with bubble gum, the handles are made of spaghetti, and the holes in the castings are full of bondo. Beat on one very hard, and you'll find out whereof I speaketh.

Congratulations on passing the GJ reading comprehension exam. Based on the two manufacturers, you certainly learned something. Great choices.

You are still ahead of the game even though you're 150 dollars deep in these two vises. You can't buy anything nearly as well made today for what you have invested in these two.

Welcome to the vise illness. We're all here to support you. :)

If you think we **** now, just keep reading other threads. One's I would recommend staying away from include topics like (topics changed due to poor memory and to further help your reading comprehension.)

What did you used to do the hard way till you found the right tool

How do I.....

What is the best....

Because of GJ I bought

It'll get expensive, but worth it.

Thanks. Looking through the other posts, I think they would look better after the "radiator shop hot dip."

I checked your location in WI to make sure you weren't too close (I remember seeing the ad on FB mrktplce), and it looks like we are far enough apart that we won't have to duel for territory!

With that being said, good finds!

Larry, neither. Just a facetious first post. I'm happy with my purchase as opposed to running to Menards, but they aren't anything to brag on either.

Nice finds! I think people tend to price things they don't understand by weight, as I have seen more than a few cast-iron cheapy vises priced similarly.

But, that said, sometimes you get lucky, and you need to be open-eyed and ready to jump on that luck.
