While moving an antique barrister bookcase, the base started to separate.
We took it apart and hauled it to the shop.

It was in need of repair and missing some of the old glue blocks.
After cleaning everything it was ready for the final assembly.

It took 13 clamps to hold everything in place................you can never have enough clamps

When I was a kid I used to hang out with dad in the shop. Sometimes when he visited a friend I got to tag along. His friend said..."you can't have too many clamps". I took it to heart. Sometimes when I have a big tool purchase I add a couple of clamps. I always buy clamps in pairs.

For some reason, I always buy in 4's.

I've lost count of the number of clamps I have in the shop, somewhere north of 25-30....I never pass them up at the pawn shops.

So true. I really like those Irwin clamps. Speaking of Irwin clamps can anyone say where I can obtain some Irwin rubber cushions for the clamps? I lost tree off my clamps and cannot find a resource for replacements. Any help would be appreciated.

A few years back, I saw a great deal on CL on Besey K body clamps (the red parallel jaw ones in the picture). I already had a healthy clamp collection, so I only bought 30 in assorted lengths from 3 to 5 feet.

I've got a dozen or so bar clamps and a variety of specialty clamps. I usually only buy them as I need them.

Here's some Festool clamps I picked up a few days ago.

Never seem to have enough although I find myself buying them at any garage sale, flea market or auction.
Last year when we were moving. I was sorting everything while packing, started out with a milk crate to put C clamps in but ended up filling 4 five gallon buckets.

Seems I had a bit more than I thought, kind of sneaks up on you buying one or two here / there.

I never could get wood to weld worth a darn :p , so I typically stick with steel and vise grips.. But the same holds true when welding, you can never have enough clamps..

Some of the variety used:

Got a few others holding the wagons front end mocked up together, and another few sacrificed to specialized body tools. Overall there's somewhere around 75 of them, most purchased used. Keep your eyes open on CL and local auctions.. ;)

I have more clamps than I can count. Smallest are around 1/2" Largest are some pipe clamps made up to about 6 feet. Lots of C clamps, Bar clamps and cabinet maker's wooden hand screw clamps.

The photo is laminating a new top for a Craftsman workbench.

Ends: Forged 8" 400 type clamps, Williams or Armstrong, plus random 3"or
4" clamps on one end and Bessey light duty F clamps on other. Sides: 4" JET brand c-clamps on one and mostly older, USA clamps, 4" & 5" on the other.

Middle: To reach the center of the 2' wide top: Two (no longer carried) 12" deep Harbor Freight slide bar clamps. And . . . here's the kicker 4 Hargrave 21202, 8" x 12" deep super reach clamps, of different vintages (2 wing handle, 2 newer with t-bar). Look 'em up; they are $$$ clamps!

Well now, if we are going to count ALL types....I have a 'few'....

This is a pic of just 'some' of my wood working clamps....I have several bar clamps...4'..8'....then my wooden ones....then C clamps....then all the special clamps....and then my straps (the kind that can wrap around a frame)....90's..etc.

I have a good many clamps of various shapes and sizes, probably close to 100 of them all together. But it seems like I never have the kind or quantity I need for a certain project! And I always buy in pairs also. I was at lowes with the wife a while back and I said I needed another clamp for a project and I grabbed two. She said "didn't you say you only needed "A" clamp? I said ya but you can't just buy one clamp, they have to be bought in pairs. That has back fired on me many times since with her buying "pairs" of things she "needs"!:lol_hitti

I am not worthy! I'm always on the lookout for some quality clamps that are inexpensive.

It's been said that you can never have enough clamps. That has been my experience. What's overlooked though is the Sad Paradox of Clamps, also known as SPoC, a logical contradiction.

You can never have enough clamps, yet you can have too many.
