call a guy on craigslist (which i'll still probably go out to see) about 3 vises hes selling. "yeah i don't remember what the manufacturer is, but its a real big heavy duty long one, weighs like 40 pounds!" ask how much he says oh im looking to get about a hundred firm for the big one its in reaaall good shape and its from the 1920's or somethin'.

......:headscrat

how can you price when you have no idea what it is?

picture is no better....

i'm fully expecting to see some oldschool harbor freight vises considering they seem to fit in a milk crate fine all together...

They don't look all the bad to me but a $100 is out of line, IMHO.

really depends for me, if i'm going to even drop 50 on a vise, it better be in good shape, not all dinged up from a hammer with good jaws. and at least be a 4-5 inch jaw. vises are so common, people spend 10 minutes on the internet and think they have gold.

i just bought a bench grinder yesterday off craigslist, and i plan on refurbing it completely.. on switch won't shut off, its got some rust, wheels need dressing or replacing. its missing face guards. but i only paid 20 for it and its an older MSC grinder 4 amp 1/4 hp one, so light duty but decent, needs a lot of work though. generally with something like that, the craigslist "antiques roadshow" enthusiasts see -old- and slap an extra 50 bucks on the price and call it vintage.

The two I see in the crate look like later model Columbian or rebrands (could be Craftsman labeled). 80's or newer, I'm thinking. $25-$40 each depending on size and condition.

Don't ask.

I think there are 3 in the crate. Hard to tell but appear to be in good shape.
I'd also guess what I'd consider a general home-owners vise. Not large or heavy duty. I've picked a coupe of those up for $5-10.
I have one on my basement (light duty/hobby) bench.

those were my thoughts, if they are homeowner duty i'd still grab a couple for random garage placement, still need a small one for my weld table. but no way i'd pay more than 20 for a little 4 inch jaw craftsman with use on it

Two small craftsman and a parker no.104 , the 104 was real beat up and needs work, and i mean like worthless to most people who own nice vises. I paid 20 because i need a vise like right now, itll hold and grip stuff, and it can be my beater for when i want to do something abusive with a vise and not worry about it

blacksmith owned, so hopefully the repair is good on it, looks like the clamping jaw broke completely off, it was reattached , although reattached about 1/8" to the right, it is straight. and the jaws are pinned in place with what looks like hammered wrought iron spikes/pins. i can only hope that the blacksmith that repaired this fired it afterwards to make it strong again.

Kracin: even a busted old Parker or other old US vise over 60 years old is worth probably $20 for parts. Sure the vise talk helps increase the knowledge and hence the value, but 50+ year old vises are becoming more rare that are in good condition. personally i'd much rather own a 70+ year old vise in good condition than a new one even though there are some great vises still being made in the US and Europe.

I've helped quite a few members put a nice old vise on their bench the last 6 months or so because i'm thinning my herd of nice old vises and just keeping a few.

post up some pictures of your $20 vise and we'll let you know if you have a user or maybe a parts vise.

Photobucket works just fine, the reason you can't find it from that link is because that is his signature, nothing to do with this thread.

Well you're certainly welcome to your opinion, same as I'm allowed mine. Every time I go to photobucket I get nuisance pop ups that lead to suspected infected sites, and sometimes the photobucket window refuses to close, I hate it.
