...to get off my but and do something with my 24 year old Snap On boxes and my mechanic tools in gereral. I've done woodworking as a hobby since 2000 and my shop and bench are geared toward that and I kept those pretty clean and organized. In the last couple of years we have gotten the bug to get back into drag racing and I've been meaning to do something with my Snap On boxes and my mechanic tools in general and you guys pushed me over the edge when I found this place a couple of weeks ago.

I bought these boxes in 1988. I have a KR657A cabinet with a KR637 top box and a KR274F side locker. I made a living out of these boxes for 10 years in the body shop business but over that past years they have been neglected and had turned into a completely disorganized mess of missing tools and drawers that barely worked. I hadn't been on the Snap On truck since 1998 when I sold my shop until a couple of weeks ago. My old dealer is still around. I bought some new stuff and filled in the blanks where things were missing and I started organizing and cleaning. The most important thing was to get all new slides for the bottom box which came in this morning. Gotta love Snap On warranty!!

I spent the afternoon getting the new slides installed and getting everything arranged. These boxes pale in comparison to most of the boxes that I've seen here but I'm pretty pleased with how these old boxes cleaned up and it's certainly a joy to actually have drawers that work!!!

Here's the boxes with the shiny new slides installed...

And here it is all back together...

It's really cool to see the old boxes looking good and working well and I've had a blast blowing my kids inheritance on new tools and cleaning and organizing the old ones.

Overall I'm super happy with the end result.

Toooo funny. :lol_hitti It's actually not a pretty as it looks in the photos. 10 years in the body shop wasn't kind to the finish. There's a ton of overspray on it that ain't coming off. I'd actually like to paint the boxes some day so maybe these really are the before pics. :D

You are fortunate that you can resurrect your relationship with your old Snap-On dealer. I am sure that the last Snap-On tool dealer that I bought tools from is either under six feet of dirt or ******* himself in an old folks home somewhere.

I think I'm about the same age as my dealer so we are both a few feet short of the grave for now. :dunno:

Even if it doesn't look different in pics, its nice just to bring something back to a better state isn't it. Plus you got to use the tools you had in it, clean them up, show them some love. It's a part of the overall hobby that we love.

I agree. This project has been one of those things that I've been meaning to do for a long time and finally got it done.

Thanks! Yes, I've tried just about everything. The overspray is stuck on the boxes like concrete. Even soaked it with laquer thinner and it barely phased it. I think I've done as much as I can do short of a complete repaint.

Looks good man.
I know the body shop is not kind to tool boxes and tools.
The dust, overspray and chems.

Good job!

I'd keep the overspray. It's part of their history- and yours. They are experienced and have stories to tell. To take away the overspray denies them their past. Let it be worn as a badge of courage.. of paint.

I lost count of all the 'great' accolades you've earned on this thread, but you certainly deserve them all.

Awesome setup, buddy!

You have a good point, Dan. I'm usually not much for the "patina" look but me and these old boxes have been thru quite a lot in our nearly 25 years together. I think I'll just leave them as they are.
