I did not run my garage door opener safety sensor wires in the wall and ceiling before I closed them up. I am disappointed in all of you for not bring this to my attention.

I am not sure if you all can ever be trusted again.

:) :)

At least I remembered to run the wire for the control switch. :(

Bwahahahahah.

My plan is working - to sow tiny seeds of chaos in the universe - ultimately culminating in a total collapse of society. The mistrust - the denials - the anger and hatred will all be mine to control :shocking:

Not too bad an outcome for doing absolutely nothing I must say :bounce:

I think I know why you are asking but I will not leave the sensors off. I have a grand son arriving soon and no way will I leave them off.

I have grand kids too,but think about something, how old will they have to be to reach the button, and who would be stupid enough to stand there and close a door on a kid??? Ive never had sensors on a door, its just something else to go wrong. If you are that worried about it, wire a wall switch into the circut so you can shut the whole thing down when ever you want. I did that in my old shop because I lived (sorta) in town and i did not want drive bys to be able to open the door with thier remote.

I hear ya but I just can not do it. If, and I know it is a big if, but if something was to happen, I could never live with myself. An hour or two of my time is worth it. I will ***** and grumble that whole time but I have to do it.

Luckily, I used T&G OSB and screwed it to the girts. All I have to do is loosen the sheets on each side of the door and tuck the wire in. From there, I have a molding on the center peak of the ceiling so I just need to pop that off and finish it up. An hour or two and I should have it done. I just hate doing **** that would have been easy a few weeks ago.

If were drywall all u have to do is cut a V groove with a stait edge, Dont cut all the way through! tuck the wires in it and mud and sand.

Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever seen the wires for the door obstruction sensors tucked away- every installation I've seen has just had them stapled to the walls/ceiling.

I left a pneumatic stool in a garage door's path this weekend and somebody had the good sense to close the door on it. It wasn't in the sensor view but the opener's anti-crush mechanism kicked in once the door caught it. I was happy not to lose my stool or door.

When I was a kid, dad's garage had solid wood doors with next to no springs, and no openers. Way too big for kids to mess with. I think it was better that way.

I'm surprised that no company has introduced a sensor package with three sensors on each side, where each sensor looks at all three for the other side. I'm not worried about kids, I'm worried about ruining the finish on my car because the door gets shut on it. Something that looks at more than the last four inches is necessary for that.

I know some people think the sensors are a pain and just one more item that can break or has to be maintained.

Seriously, how many times have you had to repair or replace the sensor eyes on a garage door opener? Never? That's what I thought. I've had to adjust mine a couple times after being bumped out of alignment. Took all of 4 seconds. I clean the photo eye when i sweep the floor by passing the broom over the eye to brush off the cobwebs.

Aside from the safety aspect of using photo eyes, I like the fact that I can stick my foot under the door to reopen it when it gets almost closed and I remember that I left my keys, glasses, beer or whatever in the garage without having to go get a key or an opener or remember my keypad code (because I never use it).

Only problem I had with the sensors at the old house is that about four days a year, twice in the spring and twice in the fall, the angle of the sun in the morning around 7:00 would be such that it would overwhelm one of the sensors and it wouldn't function. The solution was to get out of the car, stand between the sun and the sensor, and hit the button again.

Not sure about you but I don't stand there and watch my door go down all the way. I may walk to the back of the shop, hit the button in the car/truck/quad, hit the button and walk around back, walk to the house, etc.

I would never bypass the safety on my door. I know many do on here and that's up to you. For my peace of mind they stay on and functional.

I'd run no less than 6 ga 220/221 with a ground to a 60A disconnect with a NM shielded pigtail on a 50A GFCI breaker. Code would require it vented outside with a 4" conduit buried 24" in OSB. We don't have enough information - is the door open or closed and what color is it.

Say what?

Can I run my sensor wires in PVC without a transfer switch? My dad did it like that for 87 years, and I swear I'll be real careful.

OK, serious question - Is there any harm in running the senor wires back to the opener by putting them inside the rail? (Chamberlain 3/4 hp belt drive) Obviously staying away from the sheave/pulley at the ends.

Door openers are for the weak.:eyecrazy::willy_nil:eyecrazy:

I prefer to think of myself as lazy, certainly not weak.

I ran mine along the outside of the rail and zip tied them to brackets that go to the wall. Not really noticable.

Edit:

Oh wait I get it, inside the opener rail. Interesting idea. I don't see why that would not work. Let me know and maybe I will run mine that way too!!
