Some temporary 3ph power the locals installed for us... We had to drive over it every morning as it ran right across the driveway entrance. They just ran the cables right in the front door!

Although, now that I think about it I think this was Bangkok, but I do have some good ones from India as well..

From the a roof at one of our sites at the New Delhi airport...

The equipment we were installing ran off 400 vac, but these lines ran into a step down transformer first. I don't recall the exact figure..

I'm sure part of it was smog, but the primary component was dried dung burnt for heating fuel.. it was a very distinctive odor!

My bud was in Asia, said they e aimed out the door of a plant and the engineer said be careful pointing to 4 runs of rebar laying on cement blocks. It had jumper cables connected. It was plant power running between 2 buildings.

I saw similar birds nest of wiring in Kingston Jamaica slums about 15 years ago. At that time the electric plant managers estimated that 30-40% of the island power generation was lost to theft.

I took these pictures in Hanoi, Vietnam earlier this year. I went there in June for work. Notice the guy working on the ladder!

NYC used to be like that 100+ years ago.

Yep, I've looked at a lot of vintage pictures of power transmission and such. It was literally exactly that bad in the US 100 or so years ago. We ***** about the NEC a lot but it's why we don't have that **** anymore...

I have a 106 year old warehouse that still has all the original wiring. (no longer in use) It's some really scary stuff. And they were pushing some big amps through small wires! The main 3 phase shut off is a totally exposed knife switch with maybe a 1/2" long insulator on the handle for you to grab. I wouldn't touch it with insulated electrician's gloves. Yet I think we were already on the first set of NEC revisions by then. And the fuse panel from 1910 has a UL rating.
