Good evening,

I've wanted to get a good Snap-on socket wrench set for some time, and the one depicted in the photos has come across my local craigslist. The set meets my needs but I don't want to get taken for a ride. The seller is firm at $100 and I'm having a look at the tools tomorrow. I don't know Snap-on tools well, but I know there are others that do. I have the following questions:

1. Is $100 a good, fair, or poor price for this tool set
2. Do you have any sense of what decade this set might be from?

Seller description (from Craigslist Post):

3/8" drive set, like new. Includes a metal storage case (8" x 6.5" x 1.5"), 6" Ratchet, 7.25" Breaker, 9" extension, 5.75" extension, swivel adapter, and 8-12 point sockets - 3/4", 11/16", 5/8", 9/16", 1/2", 7/16", 3/8", 5/16".

Not a real bad price, but not a good deal either. The ratchet is ancient history. Personally, I'd pass and look for much newer ratchet. I'd be a buyer on this set at under $50. Maybe. I might pass even at that.

I agree with ssdave. I've gotten better for less. I wouldn't even throw an offer with an asking price like that.

I would jump on that for $100.This is a complete matching vintage set in the original box. This has collectable value,as well as practical value. The only thing that would hurt the value is if the are owners markings or engravings.

You have to know what you want. Tha stuff is nice and in great shape. The box and extras have some value, plus the sockets. The ratchet is archaic, but some people still like them. For user tools, check to make sure the sockets are flank drive. If you're in the market for modern snap on, this stuff is vintage obviously, and you would need to set aside some money for a F80 or something to compliment it.

Looking at the logo on the sockets, I'd say that there is no way they are Flank Drive. Not a deal breaker for me.I have plenty of SO stuff that is not Flank Drive that has always worked great. I do have a set of metric 3/8 6 point sockets that are Flank Drive as well as a set of metric Flank Drive combination wrenches. These get the majority of use from me,so I felt it worthwhile to spend the extra $$ on the Flank Drive feature.

I've been looking for a 3/8" breaker bar to replace my ancient craftsman one that is getting pretty lose at the head.

A clean breaker bar like that is at least $20, probably more, the ones I see for $20 on ebay aren't that clean.

That's if you want to use them, but really more of a collector thing I would think.

Clean ratchet like that is worth $25. There are cheaper ones for sale, but those are kinda beat up and a little rusty.

Metal case like that is $35 for a dingy one with a little rust, so that one has to be worth $30 to sell fast.

Universal swivel is at least $10, even the crappy one is $10 on ebay, and halfway decent is 20-25.

Extensions are $10 to $15 each for ones in worse condition.

That's $110 if they were beat up slightly rusty with chrome flaking and owners marks, and still a little underpriced at that.

That's not including the sockets, couldn't find an old 8 piece set, but even if its missing one the decent vintage ones look to be about $7, so another $50 anyway. (1/4" missing?)

Something to be said for it being a set also I would think, but maybe they are worth more individually to people filling out sets?

Not really a tool collector, but I come up with $160 ish underpricing the low end, so $100 doesn't seem out of line to me. I would think it would sell fast for that.

I didn't get very precise with shipping and all that, most of the ones I looked at included free shipping, but some were a few bucks shipping besides.

Unless there is somewhere to get cheaper older snap on tools than ebay. If there is I would like to know about it as I need a half dozen older wrenches to fill in a couple of sets I got recently as part of a tool box purchase.

I would say it was a bargain and I would bit the guys hand off to buy it. I have an old 1/2" version of this I inherited from my Father and I have abused the f*** out of it and it still works great. Snap-On still make repai kits for them too which is a nice added bonus.

I think its too much for too little IMO. That set is on par with older Craftsman USA and Proto tools that can be had for much cheaper. The ratchet is old and clanky, the sockets are plain old 12 point, and extensions are extensions. The breaker bar and universal are worth a few bucks though. Considering all the other options on eBay, I'd buy a set of Proto, Indestro, SK, Craftsman USA, etc sockets and add a Snap On F80 to go with them.

Here's a start
Snap On F80 ratchet $45 http://www.ebay.com/itm/Snap-On-F80...:g:wi0AAOSwCGVX4riR&item=182288861905&vxp=mtr
Duro Indestro sockets $25 probably http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Duro-In...743263?hash=item1a1a7ff59f:g:v1sAAOSwo0JWIYYJ

Casual users can go without the fancy drive. It seems a decent SAE set and has proven heritage.

Just check how worn out are the sockets. If they are all good it's a winner.

+1 it is military.no warranty.

Depends upon the relationship you have with your franchisee.

If you don't **** with me more than I'm willing to put up with, buy some tools once in a while and pay for them, you won't have a problem with warranty service from me.

Do you know the repair kit number? I need to get one repaired and want to give my brand new driver the number.

If it was Military it would have a M in front of the model # or at least the 1 I have does, I have these in 3/8 and 1/2 drive, I gave $20.00 for the 1/2 drive in a pawn shop, and the 3/8 drive is my go to ratchet I just love the way it feels, My son will also grap it first out of the box, at $100.00 it not a great deal, but not bad either, it is priced about where it should be,

Seems like I remember reading some place that there is a repair kit for one of snap-on newer ratchet that will fit these. I'm not 100% sure it's been a long time ago I read it, maybe one of the snap-on guys can help us out

Thanks everyone for your feedback and advise. I decided to purchase the set. It certany was not a steal (I paid $100) but I enjoy the quality and it will make a fine gift to one of kids in several years.

Thank you. Each of the pieces does in fact have a "v" in the part number. Attached are some photos. After further Inspection, I do not think these have been used before.

Each of the pieces has "FV" in front of the number. The steel box has "KRA-128"
