I did a search, but couldn't find one where forum members told what they did for a living. It seems like this sure must have been discussed many times before and thought it would be interesting to see.

Maybe this is a bad idea, but what if we had separate sections for the main major groups----mechanics, welders, engineers, etc. Obviously, we all have in common that we do stuff in our garages, but it might be good to narrow it down for more specific areas of expertise.

Or maybe people just go to other industry-specific forums if that's what they're interested in, I don't know. Just a thought.

I manage Construction Quality for Metro in LA on their large Civil Engineering projects. Last was the I-405 Sepulveda Pass Widening project, now it's the Crenshaw/LAX Transit corridor light rail project. This one will carry me to retirement in 2017. Been there since 1991.

I install, maintain, and service a specific brand of "building automation system" controllers, sensors, actuators, relays, and integrate third party controls into the system automation.

This is what my customers see when they look at there building (through their computers) and all its specific components....

WebCTRL_air-handler.png

I make the graphics, build the logic using different logic microblocks, and set up the site using windows based looking trees to make sense of where the equipment is in the building.

EIKON.jpg

I design trend graphs to monitor energy inefficiencies and basically I am the go to service technician that building engineers call on to expertly monitor, maintain, and troubleshoot any problems they have mechanically with there equipment.
Seeing a supply fan not getting status on a air handler, hot water loops cold because a pump failed or a relay failed, building static pressure blowing open outside doors, and a host of issues building engineers see on a daily basis...when they don't understand causes...they call me.

With computers being updated constantly, knowing how to access IP addresses, update server issues, and sub programs, I also have to be savvy in updating our software, managing data bases, and keeping their system backed up if a computer crashes....
...very crazy and stressful job if you let it get to you...
...especially when you have to drive all over the metropolitan area, in blizzards, snowstorm, heat waves, and monsoons, to help all these customers out.

From schools, to hospitals, commercial high rise offices and apartments, factories, post offices, and ANY big building that have a multitude of HVAC controls.

...and now, back to my 3 day weekend...thanks to Presidents day holiday, I have off on Monday.

Career? More like a semi-related string of jobs.

Presently, I am an evil overlord plotting the demise of underlings. Translated - I am an Account Executive for an IT outsourcer.

You work for Automated Logic? A million years ago I used to install and service Andover Controls. I had your system when I was in Fair Lawn. It was an older system, but worked well. Say "Hi" to Ken Adams for me..

Tommy, ya, work for a district office of ALC, not the corporate office in Georgia, so I wouldn't know Ken.
United Technologies bought up ALC and all it's affiliate offices, about 8 years ago...we are under the UTC umbrella now and all new technology. I still work on the old CMnet and U-net stuff...some of it has been running for 15 years and keeps going...not a big fan of 38K baud rate and older 90's technology...UG!:lol_hitti

So, is ALC part of UTC's Building & Industrial Systems group? I'm a former UTC person myself, now I am part of your IT outsourcer :) Must be pleasant to avoid negative MFA :D

I suppose we are part of BISG...not a big fan of corporate America...but we do what we have to.
We outsource to CDC...not a big fan of that either.
I miss having a person to go to....waited 3 months to get a laptop fixed...what a nightmare that was! Ended up getting a new PC after it was all said and done.

bobemmerich & ambenz - I'm accepting private messages for real world feedback on CSC. Yes, I can make a difference....or explain the confines in which we work (which may surprise you).
