I find that most of the time when someone asks what you do for a living they either want to sell you something or want you to do something for them.

I'm an avionics tech/test engineer. I am the ONLY guy outside of Germany who can work on a certain manufacturer's Attitude Heading Reference System, which is the device that runs the compass and artificial horizon in an aircraft. If you ever ride a Cessna 560XL, a Pilatus PC-12, a Cessna 680XL, a Bell 412, a Sikorsky S-76 or S-92or a few other aircraft, your pilot knows which way's up and which way he's going because of the device I certify.

Currently in my final year as a welding apprentice. I do my final 2 months of school in September. I honestly hate the work other than the paycheck.

I'm going to be trying to get into a fire rescue career within the next couple years. While working on that after finishing my apprenticeship, I'll be looking into getting my National Construction Safety Officer training so I can be the safety guy on site or in a shop.

I think you must be a young fellow. I can relate to not being enthusiastic about what you believe is ahead of you, but you can definitely use a few years experience as a stepping stone to bigger and better things. Obviously you're thinking along those lines...just don't get to thinking five years is a long time because it ain't! Not by a longshot. Be patient and it will pay off. I say this in the spirit of "I wish someone I trusted had sat and told me these things.!"

I have had three "careers", if you don't count the first 6 years of "paper boy".
I started delivering papers at 10yrs old, and gave up my four routes at almost age 17.

Then I went to "WORK".
General minimum wage ($2/hr at the time) labor at first, then got on with a motorcycle dealership as a mechanic.
(Career #1). Motorcycle mechanic. Worked for several dealerships and independent shops for about six years or so. Then a brief stint as a franchise manager for a Tune-Up chain.
Career #2: Went to work in the general services department of a rural county, doing auto/truck/equipment mechanical work, welding and hydraulic system repair and installation. That lasted 5 years or so, overlapping with career #3.
Career #3: Information Technology - "IT".
PC tech at first (starting in about 1983-ish?), then network tech, then systems, operating systems, management, and eventually director of a division. 26 years or so, then retired in 2013.

Current career is in beer conversion (ale-to-piss), nap taking, yard work, auction bidding, eBay selling, hobby metal-smithing and welding/fabrication. Oh, and a side of beer brewing and jewelry making and grandchild rearing.

I'm an accountant in public practice.
At least that's how I spend my days earning income to support my addiction to cool old cars and tools to fix them.

Parents were happy to help me get my accounting degrees, but wouldn't contribute anything to me learning to be a cowboy, so here we are.

Just for fun:

I squish hog toes and chicken lips.. No lie.
Boiler operator, environmental compliance, waste water operations, air quality, electrical & mechanical repair, DOT compliance, and whatever "The MAN" says I need to do. Been doin this damn job for about 30yrs. and my shoulders are tired from propping everyone else up.

DJ

Too funny. I don't operate boilers. But I do Hazardous Waste management/training, waste water operations, DOT Hazmat/Haz Waste Shipping, environmental compliance (although we got an Environmental Engineer so that is waning), waste water system maintenance/repairs, cryogenic and hazardous material management....

I also have my own business doing truck and trailer service which includes a lot of Jack of all trades kind of stuff. I do that two nights a week and Saturdays.

This looks like the most recent thread for this so: I spent the first 24 years of my career as a civil engineer, registered eventually in two states, designing primarily residential and commercial site development projects. Everything from soils to parking lots, lighting to water supplies. I gave that up two years ago to become the director of environmental services (buildings and grounds, custodial) at our state's Veteran's Home. Kind of a jack-of-all-trades position, suits me well. I have another 20 years or so here before I retire.

Setting up shop now so I can do some custom cabinetmaking and furniture building on the side.

Welder/metal fabricator. Hopefully in a few years I'll be a Mechanical/Electrical Engineer. Yes double major but from what I've learned they overlap each other a lot.

Im a Firefighter

I know I don't know you but thank you for your service to your community. I have the utmost respect for service men/women (military, firefighters, police officers...ect.)

I'm the Fleet Manager for the largest family owned ready mixed concrete and sand and gravel producer in the state of MD. We run about 200 trucks through VA, MD and DE. 27 years total so far with this company. The last 10 as Fleet Manager with 3 1/2 years doing double duty as Fleet Manager and Concrete Operations Manager through the recent depression. I was a road mechanic for 17 years before this management thing.

Designer for a residential builder for the last year and a half. Prior to that I managed a sandwich shop in the years between graduating school and finding full time employment in the architectural field. 2010 was the worst possible time to graduate with an architectural degree...
