I have a decent lisle kit that has worked alright for me in the past.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0009OR93S/?tag=atomicindus08-20. Which is a REALLY good price for this kit if anyone is looking for one, I just came across it when googling for an image!

But this weekend I was helping a buddy pull an engine and he had a powerbuilt one from autozone that worked pretty good also, the installer even had a thrust bearing and it seems like it has more threaded adaptors than mine. It's 45 bucks, it felt decent but didn't feel top notch quality.

The snap on ones are similar to my lisle but they don't use any threaded adaptors, the press screw just pushes against the shaft. And the SO installer also has a thrust bearing.

So what are you guys using? I will be doing my cousin's power steering in the not to distant future and just looking at my options. I'm sure my puller will get the job done but I thought the thrust bearing was really nice for installation.

My go-to set is Snap-on for pullers and installers, but I've got an OTC set that I used before I got the Snap-on pullers. They also get used for the rare occasions that the Snap-on set doesn't work for whatever reason.

KD 2897 in the red box are made in the USA the gray are imported. NAPA had them on sale for $65.00 and you can get them cheaper on Ebay.

The snap on installer looks nice but it only has one thread size when most of the other kits come with a bunch of adapters. Does the snap on ones work on all vehicles?

I have the OTC (not stinger) set that has held up for years. It was about a 100 dollars new. For sheer speed of removal Kent-Moore made a double ended puller (I have one and there is one somewhere in the classifieds that can take about any pulley off in seconds.

I have the snap-on set and it's by far the best I've used. As for the installer only having 1 size... I also keep the HF set around if I need another size. The HF pressure screw with adaptors fits in the snap-on installer. The snap-on bearing setup is just so much better than the basic kits I've used.

I bought the hf one. It did not work once. The threads failed with just a ratchet on it. I took it back. I then rented the powerbuilt one from advanced and used my impact. It worked so I didn't return it.

I wonder why snap on would only have one size adaptor when most of the other kits come with a handful of different ones? Just seems weird that if they make the best installer that it wouldn't come with all the other adaptors the cheaper kits come with.

Hey fellas, need to get a new power steering pump into our Volvo (98 S70) and am reading all these horror stories of pulleys not coming off and tools not working. Figured I'd come on here and see if anyone had any insight.

What is the best power steering pulley puller for metric threaded pulleys?

It seems like every puller set available on Amazon (Lisle 39000, GearWrench 2897, Lang 5238, OTC 4530) are all for SAE threaded pulleys. Almost all the reviews are about Fords and Chryslers... Am I missing something here? I'm not against buying tools (GJ, right?) but kind of want to buy the right tool The "official" Volvo pulley puller tool is not longer sold... Go figure. ...

OK, it seems that Pelican Parts recommends using SNAP ON CJ3PSA to remove the pulley. OK, lets see how much this costs...

Uhm, $329.95, new.

About $150+ on eBay.

I have been using the OTC remover and installer that I purchased back in 94-95 (this was before the Stinger stuff)and not had any issues. Almost every time the remover was used it was with an air ratchet or impact gun. Being a GM tech I only ever needed the 3/8-16 installer pilot.

Made this bad boy one sunday when I got caught with my pants down. The diagonal piece is the installation tool that stores in the body so it's all together.

I have an old one that has individual jaws. I use a worm gear clamp on them to keep the jaws from spreading as it pulls a stuck pulley off. Takes just a minute to tighten and then never slips off.

same here, but I've probably only used it half a dozen times in 10 years or so. of course it was used when I got it so who knows...I do know the plastic is faded and not bright red anymore, so if that is important to you a more expensive brand may look prettier longer...

The HF pulled fine, but I had to resort to a strap wrench to get the new one on. I still don't understand why the pulley was spinning.

While working in GM Dealerships; I was well accustomed to using the pro grade Kent-Moore and OTC type tools. That stuff was built to last.

Greener Pastures later, I was strolling thru Harbor Freight and bought their set. I questioned the quality; and verified My thoughts when it broke on the first attempt to use it. I applied minor torque compared to what was often applied to the shop pullers.

I’ve got the lisle 39000 set at work, works great. Also have an Astro pneumatic set at home and works great for occasional jobs.

Thanks for all the feedback fellas. I went with the Lisle 39000. Great little tool that needs better instructions. I think I ruined some threads from over-tightening something I wasn't supposed to. But it's solid. I think I should be able to use the pieces for the a Volvo power steering pump pulley at least three more times... (Luckily there are two more in the family!)

So are all power steering pumps made in the US? Or of US designs?[/B
I found this short article on Saginaw pumps... But I feel like it's missing a lot of information...

I was rather confused with our car being a Volvo and having metric threads and bolts for everything, but the pump itself saying SAGINAW and the ACDELCO rebuilt piece I purchased has a giant sticker on it indicating that it was for GM cars...
