I love the Starrett Tough Tapes. Can be had for around $6 from Travers or Rutland on sale. The lines just seem crisper to me than anything from Stanley or Lufkin.

I can't stand tapes w 32nd grads. It just clutters the tape and if you can't split the 16ths by eye then, well, you're retarded. If you need tighter than that a tape measure is the wrong tool to be using.

At any given moment, the tape I like best is the one I can find. For me it seems like 15% of any project is trying to find the tape measure. It's my own personal problem , but annoying just the same. My favorite has been a 25' Stanley leverlock that I've had through countless projects over 25 years and it chugs on. My only gripe with it is that the chrome finish makes instant camoflage so it blends in with whatever it's sitting on amplifying the can't find it problem. I wonder why so many tape are chrome finish. It does tend to make them disapper. I like the fatmax tape to use, but I've had a few fail in a short time . The return spring fails and it is not reparable.

I don't recall offhand, but it's British - they're also the OEM for the big Johnson Nissan mentioned.

That would be a Fisco tape measure, I have used Stanleys for years and since the quality has gone right down recently (bought two of them that wouldn't retract after being pulled out and they were brand new) I switched to Fisco.
And its made in England.

Thank you for that. Could you tell me approximately what the cost of a BMI 405 Viso No.20293 with the metric-only tape would be (Euro, USD, or DM are fine, I'm just looking for an approximation) if you were to buy one there in Germany? I've contacted bmitools.com to try to locate a distributor but I'd like to know about how much money to expect if there's a state-side distributor for that tape.

I cannot believe I never realized this. Thanks for explaining this. The loose rivets make much more sense to me now.

Cheers!

Jim

Never knew this either until recently reading that in a woodworking magazine.
Also read if your tape measure breaks, won't rewind or whatever, don't just throw it away. Cut the tape into 1 foot pieces and use in shop. I did that the other day and tacked one up by my screw supply rack to measure screws to put back in correct bin.
I actually cut the first piece into a 3 footer and the rest into 1 foot. Those 1 footers come in handy on small projects.

I like the bright orange tapes....easy to spot on work bench.

I got one tape I replaced the belt hook with about a 3" round magnet. Works good in shop.

I also have a 40' Fat Max. Hard to handle but sure came in handy when building my garage. One time I left it up on top sill plate and sure missed it for about a week before I found it again.
