I cannot believe I never realized this. Thanks for explaining this. The loose rivets make much more sense to me now.

Never knew this either until recently reading that in a woodworking magazine.
Also read if your tape measure breaks, won't rewind or whatever, don't just throw it away. Cut the tape into 1 foot pieces and use in shop. I did that the other day and tacked one up by my screw supply rack to measure screws to put back in correct bin.
I actually cut the first piece into a 3 footer and the rest into 1 foot. Those 1 footers come in handy on small projects.
I like the bright orange tapes....easy to spot on work bench.
I got one tape I replaced the belt hook with about a 3" round magnet. Works good in shop.
I also have a 40' Fat Max. Hard to handle but sure came in handy when building my garage. One time I left it up on top sill plate and sure missed it for about a week before I found it again.
