Your garage's sound system.

So, I have decided to "upgrade" my shop's sound system, as I currently have a small boombox on a shelf.

While cleaning things up, I have found enough equipment to build a full car stereo, and have been thinking. Anyone else have a car stereo based garage stereo?

I had an old Delco from a 92 Bonneville in my garage hooked up to a 12v power adapter from Radio Shack. It's easy to wire up. No pics, sorry. I since replaced it with a home amp I found in a dumpster.

I purchased a kitchen cabinet from IKEA and mounted it up on the wall near the flat screen, it holds the surround sound amp, XM radio, DVD player, and cable box. All tucked away behind a glass door that protects it from dust. Surround speakers wired thru the walls of course.

No car strereo system in the barn just a standard boombox with remote. We upgraded the tv in the house, so now I have included a TV with standard cable.

You could run speaker wire and have a speaker in each corner to help even out the sound for the whole garage.

I have a pawn shop Kenwood reciever hooked to 2 8" behind the seat truck boxes so I have 1/2 a car stereo in the shop . I did put the speakers on differant walls and I can irritate the neighbors if I really want to with it total investment under $50.00 bucks .

I have a 6.1Ch Sony receiver powering 6 in wall 8" speakers with 1" 2way tweeters. Two in the shop, 4 in the showroom. A PC is attached which acts as a digital jukebox, as well as internet access for the showroom. Playing in car race footage is awesome...echo is amazing.

Lounge upstairs is getting a 7.1 Denon system.

I have an old car stereo fited to the wall. Speakers el cheapo from a swap meet. Do not use it a lot. Runs of a 12 volt battery pack.

I plan to run a seperate line off the b side of my home amp setup to a volume control and a set of yet to be determined speakers.

It's hard to beat the sound of a Wurlitzer jukebox (or two) in the garage! Plus, I've got a Pioneer 500 watt sound system with 18-disc CD player all hooked to a complete sound-activated dance club lighting system. Great for garage parties!

In the attached garage, I have a simple boombox, though I'd always planned to run the B or C Zone off of the preamp in the family room, I've just never gotten around to it. When the detached gets finished, I'll be moving my old system from the workout area in the basement to the garage. Old Yamaha C-85 Preamp, M-85 Poweramp, Multidisc CD Player, IPod dock, and use an old set of Cerwin Vega D-9E's for the garage area with another zone to the little porch off the garage that faces the pool. The only issue with the setup is that the older Yamaha preamp doesn't have a remote control, but I'll likely just put an inline volume control out on the porch for the outdoor speakers.

So how often does the tape deck eat a tape up? Aaaahh the good ole days!! Pop a new 8 track in and listen to it get slower and slower only to be about one second too late on pulling it out before it got wound up in the tape deck. LOL!!!

PC power supply will work battery charger will work too I used one to power the fans on a homemade TV projection system I builtt a few years ago.

I have a mid 1970's Kenwood amp and two 15" self-built cabs loaded with all JBL components. I also have the matching tuner. At about 3 (it goes to 10, duh) its a bit too loud for me. That reminds me, though... I need to clean the pots today.

Did you try adding a outdoor antenna? All you need is a wire.

Simply wire in a Cigarette plug and plug it inot a power / jumpstart pack.

Most metal sheds will act like a 'Faraday Cage' and not let signals in. Any good antenna mounted inside or even better outside will work well. My system has an old car antenna on below the ceiling.

I might do the same thing just to keep the "car" theme going out there. MAke sure the Ohms resistance of the speakers are the same. Most car stereos I believe are 4 ohms and house stereos are 8 usually.

I think it would be sweet to have a dashboard hung on the wall with the stereo lit up playing tunes.

If you want evenly distributed sound keep in mind that 1 speaker will accomodate about 100 square feet of floor plan. So every ten by ten section should have a speaker above it in the ceiling. If you do less than that you will find yourself cranking it up and screaming at each other near the speakers and not being able to hear it well at the other end away from the speakers.

The converted car-stereo reminds me of a toolbox I saw in a shop once... it had a car stereo mounted in the hutch section. Pretty cool.

I'm new to this "Great" site, but,
I thought that I might share my Garage Stereo setup with everyone. I cut out the dashboard from a 1957 Belair...Car was too far gone, but the dash was all there and intact...I welded up a "stereo Box", so that my old JVC car stereo would slid right in, painted the dash, mounted it to the wall so that the top could also be used as a shelf. I picked up a Power supply from a local Science and Surplus store, I still want to wire the entire dash up so that when I turn on the key, and turn on the light switch, the entire dash lights up...although right now, I do have the stereo working. It also has the original working clock...so I have the time. Kinda Cool!
The glove compartment opens up and I have a suction mount to hold my Ipod, which has a plug coming out of the rear of the JVC. This way, If I choose to, can play that all day...it plugs right into the Lighter portion of the 57 dash. Any friends can come over with their Ipod and CD's also and plug them right in. The speakers are also car speakers that are wired into the cieling and covered with Retro looking Brushed Stainless steel 10" round speaker covers that I bought off of Ebay. Looked like they were in a school at one time...I bought a box of 12. I used 4 in the garage and 4 in my basement around my pool table. I have the same setup down there too.
The JVC setup also has a remote...cool as H**l. and works great!
AM/FM...CD...Ipod...what more do ya need while your working in your Home away from Home! Thanks Guys...Keep up the great posts...I love em.

I live in Vermont and we have really no reception of anything; TV, cell, FM radio.
I have SIRIUS in the house so I use the shop (100 foot from the house) laptop to get SIRIUS off of the internet. I run it to an external amp and speakers. The laptop is wireless to the house so I get internet and music to the shop all in one.

Home theater Amp, 75w per channel. 2 speakers, 1 10 inch sub. I use my Macbook pro to stream Pandora, or iTunes. If I'm being lazy I'll just plug in the iPod and put it on Random. Works pretty well and allows me to avoid local radio. I also have a projector set-up which I can stream video to from my Notebook, or a DVD. Looking into getting DirecTV going in the future.
