Some people prefer to remain somewhat annonymous for their person security so they choose not to post their location. That is something that should be respected. As such I think its nice to know where people are located to hopefully meet new people, but I don't think it should be mandatory.

Who knows?
I'm a bit confused as to why you think it should be mandatory? I read your first post, but I guess I missed your intent?!?!

I don't think it should be mandatory, but it is nice to see when someone is from the same state.

With photo's logging longitude and latitudes, listing a location is just another ring on the target.

There's a reason it's an option.

This question comes up every few months, it seems. I think some people are a little paranoid (they don't have to give out their street address, even a state or region would help) but as long they indicate where they're at when they ask questions it doesn't really matter.

I don't know why it's so complicated it seems to me the first question is allways where do you live?? If the state or province was provided it would help. Just an idea guys. Thanks Larry

I think its nice to know if ppl live to area and maybe meet or swap parts, tools, etc but don't think mandatory. I agree if some have things or places that would make them a target for thieves.

There are guys on here that have a lot more expensive toys and tools than me that give their location, and I'm not James Bond, so I don't mind giving mine. To each his or her own, though.

I agree with Larry. Maybe not mandatory, but its certainly common sense to have your general location listed when asking or answering any question that would be affected by your location or climate. What's the big secret?

i have also thought that it should be mandatory to at the very least list the state that you live in. if you don't feel comfortable listing the town, you could do something like "southern NH" "western MA" "upstate NY" etc. etc. that is good enough for forum purposes, but so vague that no one can use the info to harm you.

If people are worried about someone finding out where they live, they shouldn't buy or sell on here. Packages have address on them!:lol_hitti

Yeah, I never understood that paranoia either, if you're online, you can be found.

So what's the big worry? There are a number of people on this forum from my town, I've never run across any of them, nor would I know where to look....

Anybody remember the white pages, where people used to not only put their name and phone number, but also their exact address!?!?!?!? I was in the library one day and happened across a phone book for KC from 1937, in it I found my grandfather's listing, it not only had his name, address and phone number, but also where he worked!

And it does come up a lot when folks are asking questions, especially about building a garage, or doing just about anything to it!

Even better, cell phones log your longitude and latitude in the data fields of images. I feel it's best to mask that data. Not a thing one wants to broadcast to the world where your home and prized possessions are located.

But that's just my opinion.

Better yet, if you are that concerned about your "stuff" you probably should not even be posting.

Oh I forgot, it is about the bragging rights I suppose.

I've brought this up a lot of times as have many other members. If a person would just post their State, then it really helps with answering questions like, "How deep do my footers need to be"? Michigan is deeper than Ohio, which Ohio is deeper than Florida. So if someone asking the question, if their State is in their profile, there are many members from the same State that can answer the question, instead of 50 other people taking a guess, or giving the wrong info.

If someone seriously wants to track you down, you'll screw up in one of the threads anyways and give your location. And it doesn't have to be the town, or even the North, South, East, or West. Just the State helps to answer questions.
