hello guys. i have a 20 gallon shop vac sitting on the floor of my garage taking up precious real estate ( its a single car hut!!) and am looking for ideas to get it off the floor. i kinda have an idea of what i want to do but thought i would come to you for ideas as well before i do what i want. i was thinking of building a shelf above my little heater which sits in the corner and mounting it up there, then running 2" pvc pipe around the roof line of the shop. kinda redneck central vac eh?
then i thought about mounting it in the attic of the shop so i would not have to listen to it but then if i wanted to change the bag it would be a pain. plus i dont imagine the motor would like starting up in -30 degree C.
let me know what you guys think.
thanks
clarence

Seriously...mounting it on the wall / corner of a wall is a great idea.
THe only thing is, can you take it down to clean it out, when it is full of stuff?
Using it as a central vac type of system, may work, depending on how powerful the motor is. Remember that the longer the run and larger the tube, you would need a more powerful motor to ****. That is why you do not see serious hose extensions, when buying shop vacs.

How about some pictures of the shop, so we know what we have to work with?

Do you have any other tools, on tool stands? (like a small drill press)

On the woodworking forums a while back, there were pics about shop vac boxes, that reduced noise, yet allowed ventalation, and could be used as stands. Put a door on it, and have access.

i am embarassed to show the size of my um.......shop. compared to others on here, mine is like a washroom!! just kidding. ill post up a pic of the inside when i get a chance. inside dimensions are 14' x 22'. i use it primarily to work on custom sleds so no vehicle goes in it. i used to have a 69 charger, hence my user name, but i sold it 2 years ago. the wife and i are now looking for another one. just a couple pics of the work in progress. not really the right area for this but......

well here are the pics of where i would like the vacuum to go. and i noticed that i made a mistake. it is a 13 gallon, not 20. anyway, i will take the bracket that the heater is on and move it up to make a shelf and put it on there, i think. where the heater is now i will build a metal workbench so i can do my welding and grinding without doing it on my wooden bench. also notice the new addition to the shop! only 299 full of bolts to!!!

My garage is a mess compared to yours. Where did you get the bolt rack/bolts? And I have a shop vac I move all the time, and steam cleaner, de-humidifier, etc. Looking for good ideas myself.

i got the bolt bin from acklands-grainger. it is in the current sale flyer. it goes on sale about 4 times a year. i just waited till it was on sale and bit the bullet. glad i did. i was tired of digging through coffee bins to fine my bolts.
where i wanted my vac to go, i realize that it is too big for that so i am looking at other ideas. when i have it in place, i will post pics. right now i am also in the middle of putting my air compressor out in my shed then 2" styro and a 60 watt light bulb in so i can run it in the winter as well. ill get some pics up of that as well.
thanks for the replies guys!

I stuck mine is a storage area behind but attached to the shop. All the dust and noise out of the shop. I used a cheap ceiling fan remote control to turn it on and off. Plumbed the shop with tubing and plenty of ports for the blast cabinet, tools and vac hose. I use plumbers test plugs for the ports not in use. For the grinder and stationary belt sander I have a 5 gal bucket based water trap that the dust goes into prior to being pulled into the system to arrest sparks. It also works well as a fume extractor when welding.
