Your Thoughts about This JIS Screwdriver Set?

I'm looking for Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) screwdrivers to work on my Toyota's throttle body, which has screws indicating JIS screwdrivers are needed.

What are the pros and cons of having 4 screwdrivers for 4 sizes vs 1 screwdriver with removable tips?

Also, the first link lists that they work for motorcycles, but the #1, #2, and #3 indicate to me that they work on any JIS screws. Is that correct?

I'm thinking of these:

I'd probably opt for the Hozan set. I have Vessels, and they're awesome, but I'm not keen on the interchangeable drivers.

The first set is great except they don’t offer a holder for the extra bits. Vessel makes one of the best drivers in Japan.

The hozan set i would steer clear of. Conflicting information about them but most people have stated that they aren’t good. Soft tips etc.

If I were you I would hop onto Amazon.JP (switch language settings to English) and get the Vessels 1,2,3 straight from there.

I just put them in my basket and the Vessel 0,1,2,3 total is $35 with shipping estimate June27

I have the Vessel 220W. I also have the Vessel 900 drivers and the Vessel #1, 2, 3 insert bits. I don't have the Hozan.

I'd buy all of those... because that's what I did--Haha! ;) The insert bit set is A16621. If you Google it, you should find it for around $3 plus shipping. With the bits, you can use your ratcheting screwdriver or a fixed bit driver. They're cheap so buy a few sets and you'll have spares.

The 900 that are on Amazon have "Jaws fit" serrations that help grip the fastener. They also make them without "Jaws fit" but those are not on Amazon.

I was surprised that I like the ball driver but it's handy around the house. My only complaint is that the bits are coated with something that appears to be black paint.

The Hozans are made by Vessel.

Either will work, so will the bits.

I use the Gold Makita bits from Home Depot for JIS, or at least ehat I think are JIS, screws. The screws are on really old Makita tools. The bits, or at least the individual ones in the four packs, are made in Japan.

Thanks. Besides $.06, what's the differene between the basic and the original brand?

$16.99 shipping and whatever else. That one is not fulfilled by Amazon. I wouldn't be surprised if they are the same but you'd have to ask the seller. Probably doesn't matter since you probably don't want to pay $16.99 shipping.

Often the descriptions aren't very good or accurate. I'd blame it on the language barrier (foreign seller) but the descriptions from US sellers are just as bad and sometimes completely wrong. If I have questions I look up the model numbers and ask the seller before I order.

I have the Vessel ball driver that Sears used to sell under the Craftsman brand. It has a #2 on one side and a weird #1/3 on the other that works surprisingly well.

I think that you can find these on eBay now. IIRC, Zephyr tool group is selling this sort of ball driver on eBay too. Their eBay page is always worth looking at.

Hang tight for Foxy Mark. He owns every JIS made

Not every one made but close. The Hozan set is made by Vessel but I'm not real fond of the plastic handles.

I realize JIS is different, but are you guys using these drivers on Phillips, or are you simply finding more JIS in your chores?

"JIS" drivers/bits fit phillips heads just fine, but not the other way around. I run across a lot of JIS fasteners, as I wrench on vintage Jap motorcycles. I've been using the Vessel JIS screwdrivers for almost 2 decades.

The Vessel 900 series has some advantages over the Hozan that the OP is looking at. Notably the handle shape and knurled shaft which is a great design feature.

Wow!

Besides the Hozan plastic handle, Which model your favorite, least favorite, and why?

What are the pros and cons of having dedicated, one screwdriver slot, screwdrivers vs the ones that have removable (and long) tips, like the black Vessel on the lower left?

Both. Once I realized there were JIS screws, I find that little dot on more things that I ever noticed before. If it’s a Japanese car, bike, or computer/electronic equipment I’ll pull out the JIS compatible drivers.

Of course, supposedly the JIS specs for screwdrivers are no more and are out of date, replaced by some other ISO/DIN standard that will drive JIS screws. I suppose the majority of newer Japanese and German cross screwdrivers can drive JIS screws and Phillips just fine.

As others have said, the major problem is putting a Phillips driver into a JIS screw. You easily strip out the head of the screw when this happens.

Of note, watch out for some European stuff with their posidriv screws too. Same problem of stripping out the screw heads if the wrong driver is in there,

Megadora are the favorite for general carb or Roland printer work. The woody handles are great for working on stuff when your hands are greasy/oily. The ball driver with different bits is a good loaner for people who have never heard of JIS screws, all the different sizes will cover about anything.
The Hozan have great fitting tips but the handles are smaller with a slimmer handle so they are harder for me to get a good grip on.
The Vessel impact driver is great for older Japanese motorcycles where the engine side covers are held on with JIS cross point screws that are probably already ragged out from someone else using a standard Phillips driver. Also great is for Honda car brake rotors held on by screws.

Updated photo with another Vessel set (Red & Purple handles) that are identical to the Hozans with a few more sizes included.

I love my Vessel Megadora drivers. I have several of the 900 series (green), a couple Impacta and the ball driver with interchangeable tips and recommend them all highly.

Do you prefer your Megadora or the Woody style? Are the Woody style tips nice? I want to purchase one of these two but have been going back and forth for awhile now. Do one of these two have better grips?

OK, I like the trim clip tools pictured... what model number are those, especially the double-bend one?

Good luck finding the double-bend--haha! I've looked and then I saw in his video that it's difficult to find. The other one is 970 CR-120.

I bought the basic set of 5 replacement bits in a "belt" holder for like $8 shipped on Amazon, then picked up the impact and a few more from Sears.

Technically JIS ended a few years ago and most switched to a DIN standard that also fits the old JIS.

Megadora handles are my favorite just because they are the largest handle size. Tips are identical between the 2.
Most of the them were purchased through JDV https://www.vesseltools.com/handtools/screwdrivers

I have a lot of Vessel in the Megadora, ball grip(including the Craftsman branded one) and Impacta series. The tools I repair at work have lot of JIS screws in them. How or why considering the tools are newer than when the JIS standard switched to DIN I have no idea, but they do. Needless to say, Vessel drivers are the only ones we don't have a problem stripping things with. Several of us carry the ball grip, single bit reversible PH1/3 and PH2 driver in our small belt pouches as it covers just about every thing we need it to.

I use the woody style at work and at home, and they're awesome. They feel very good in hand and don't slip at all. I've even used them submerged in an oil tank and they don't slip. The tips are excellent.
JDV is an (the?) authorized distributor of Vessel tools.

I can vouch for JDV tools. I bought some Vessel stuff from them, and they have great support.

I also buy some Vessel stuff through Japanese sellers on E-Bay.

I just bought the vessel set and they seen really nice. I only need jis very rarely so the multi driver style works for me.

By the way, there is a guy on eBay with the craftsman 12156 (rebranded Vessel) for $6.49 with free (and fast) shipping. I bought one along with a co-worker. Highly recommend you snag one of those for that price.
