I currently have a 761 / 791 combination that I picked up for $2k. However, this puppy just came up on CL today and I think I like the layout better.

He calls it a 1013 but I think it's a 1023? Is $2500 a good deal or an average deal?

It looks like a KRL1003 which was the predecessor to the KRL1023. If it is a KRL1003, I think $2500 is a good deal. The only difference between the 1023 and the 1003 is the 1023 had 2 full length drawers on the wide bank where the 1003 has the drawer configuration shown.

Yep 1003. For 2500 it would have to be in good condition to be a good deal. CL photos just don't do good boxes justice and make bad boxes look good.

I gave the owner a call. It's 7 years old and in *very* good condition. No dust, dents, etc. That top is not stainless, it just looks stainless in the photo. It has the plain rubber mat.

So now the question is... do I stick with my top and bottom box or do I "upgrade" to this guy?

Thats a call you are going to have to make. After you sell your current combo, you will not have much in this box. I dont think you will be gaining much in the way of overall tool storage space but you will be gaining a work surface. Someone can correct me if I am wrong about the storage capacity, I dont feel like digging thru my old catalogs and adding up cubic/square inches of capacity. I prefer a big roll cab over a top and bottom box but that is just my personal preference. If it was me, I would be headed over to look at that box with some money in hand. You can probably bring it home for less than the asking price.

Edited to add: I sold a used mint KRL1003 with a stainless top last year for around $6k

if he is willing to accept less then the listed price, even better! as it sits, looks like a good $2500 box

I think that there is more usable space in the 1003. The extra 5 inches of depth and about 4 inches of height and extra width really add up over all the drawers. The top section of a 791 where the lid closes becomes a catch all for most people. If you are cramped for space I would stick with the 761/791 but if you have the room I would go with the 1003. Thats just my, your mileage may vary, lol
