Ignore any video where the guy has a stupid expression on his face in the thumbnail, as if he's trying to pretend to be confused that his picture is being taken. Those videos are guaranteed to be worthless and annoying.

Unboxing videos are essentially useless since they never test the tool, let alone actually use them. They stumble through opening a box like they're a 4 year old disassembling a rocket ship and say "this tool looks good, feels good in the hand, it's a great tool".

There's nobody in particular that I watch; mostly just searching for what I have interest in buying then sifting through the ****. Some suggestions already made here I will look for and try to watch some videos of interest though

Doing what TTC does and gaining the reputation where people don't just pick your stuff apart or are suspect to the results is tough. Plus youtube basically requires clickbait to succeed, it's a sad cycle. The guy from TTC is around on this forum and is a stand up dude, so that definitely has helped him, but he's got his formula down and enough followers that he's now a "known source" just like project farm...anyone new trying to break into it, takes a lot of effort and luck.

I know it's not politically correct but CP the Tool Addict is just too ugly for me to watch him.

He can’t speak the English language very well and his political rants are a turn off. If I want that kind of commentary, I’ll turn my cable back on.

I liked Real Tool Reviews too until he bought a Skidmore torque tester and then the expression: "If you only have a hammer then everything in the world looks like a nail." come into play. He had a lot more variety prior to that.

What ever happened to him? He just disappeared.

It seems like Project Farm is occupying the same space so Real Tool Reviews will probably not be coming back.

I used to watch CP a lot, until I started voicing any opinion that disagrees with him, he just ends up blocking people. Midwest Tool also posted a video the other day with voice recordings of CP dropping hard "R" racial slurs (though he's taken that video down, I'm guessing cause YouTube didn't like the words being said). Either way, I wouldn't really put it past him.

I'm a big fan of Rex Krueger and Paul Sellers. I got into hand tool woodworking awhile back, and those two have been super helpful in many ways. A few of the others mentioned above (TTC, Real Tool Reviews, Project Farm, etc.) when I'm looking into tool comparisons prior to purchase (or even just curiosity). Although Real Tool Reviews has basically vanished, as mentioned above, as well.

Midwest Tool can come off as a Snap-On fanboy a little too much sometimes but I do overall really enjoy his channel. And I feel for him because he seems to get a lot of **** from other creators. Dude is just there making good videos about tools and people always turn things around on him for no reason.

A lot of content creators, like CP, have started to get political and it’s weird BUT you kinda can see it coming because they start going on about COO and then it spirals from there. It also tends to come from the creators with insider knowledge of the industry.

I miss channels like German Tool Reviews. Too bad he stepped aside for health reasons. Same with Mark Fox. I have been enjoying channels where the guys are experiencing their tools or projects firsthand, like Chris Cas or LoneStarMopars or Bzueg (he clearly has a nerdy side). It’s fun seeing people experience something in the moment and how they can immediately find all the problems with something they thought would be helpful or awesome.

I def cant stand "Tool Review Zone" I blocked his Youtube channel. He seems to do legit reviews and demo of tools but makes stupid silly faces and talks like a dumb idiot. The tone is obnoxious and I refuse to watch his stuff.

Yes! I remember this guy. Not to knock any trades but it was like a drywaller trying to sell me sockets for the automotive profession.

He is from Philly where most of what you're complaining about is pretty normal to that area. Hell man they boo Santa Claus.

ChrisCas - Tool Aficionado is my favourite tool reviewer at the moment, although he specialises mainly in Japanese tools. I believe he buys them all himself and works for a living so the youtube content is strictly a part time gig

Does the occasional 'in use' content

Will also point out anything that he does not like, couple of examples of Koken issues in this one (gives a shout out to this forum), which saved me wasting some money.

Just wish he would make more content

Not so much a tool review channel but I am also enjoying watching a weekend warrior attempting a restoration on a Kawasaki Z1R - I think he has been at it for just under a year, and he leaves his mistakes in the videos which I am a fan of.

Good luck fella I hope you get it finished one day without bankrupting yourself !

CHECK OUT

Real World Tool Reviews - he is very humble down to earth guy who just hangs out and talks about tools and likes collecting vintage USA brands. He is more of a handyman than a mechanic so his tools reflect contracting work

Cazando Herramientas - his channel is fully in Spanish, but I find that his knowledge and content is so excellent that I watch all of his videos with subtitles. If you don’t know how just click CC on the YouTube video and then auto-translate to your language of preference

Big Vic’s Workshop - funny, humble, a bit quirky his tool haul videos are a huge enjoyment, as well as seeing him feed apples to his horse

Thanks, I watch some other content creators as well but those are the ones that haven’t been mentioned.

OP was after old tools not new reviews. I just found this guy "Eight Penny" a few weeks back. He covers a lot of older SO. Real vintage stuff, some of it still in boxes. Pretty sure hes actually working as a tech as well. Great channel

Catus Maximus is good as well. Hand tool rescue deals with restoration, but has some old tools on his channel too.

Scout crafter is very knowledgeable but, in my opinion, he sometimes goes way overboard in cleaning his vintage tools to the point of devaluing them. Example the handle came out of the factory with sharp edges so let's take it to the belt sander and just kill the **** out it, type of approach.

I have a guy that like me just loves tools, but his knowledge is limited somewhat, whereas scoutcrafter knows everything. Now my guy on youtube picks up amazing vintage tools most every weekend and he pays so little for them which just blows me away.:thumbup:

Anyhow an old post of mine in case you are interested in his youtube: (for best tool hauls)

I agree that SC’s methods could be considered invasive by some, as he does appear to love his small belt sander and flap disks. However, I can’t think of any video where he has gone over the top with a resto that mangled an otherwise useful or collectible tool. Some of the projects he tackles would be absolute lost causes in the hands of many. Lots of Harry Homeowners would just as soon toss an old metal tool box full of rusty tools in the trash (and I’m sure it happens all the time) vs. spending any time working them back up to pace. Overall, most of SC’s methods are sound, he is an advocate for safe and responsible use of tools, he’s a super consistent content creator, and he has done a LOT to get others into the hobby. Heck, he has a whole group that meets up with him at one of the big East Coast tool swaps.

As far as “devaluing” the tools - I could see where some of the old tools he paints up in various colors (say, coloring in the pebble grip of an old Proto or SK ratchet) might turn people off, but hey, they are his tools after all. In fact, I could see some of the projects he’s done gathering a collector following of their own should he ever choose to liquidate his collection, and there will be a video archive of the work to accompany the piece.

This is the first I’m watching of him, based on your recommendation and it’s almost unwatchable. I gave up after 5 minutes and only lasted that long before I’m really curious about learning more about Koken.

He talks super slowly and says “umm” or “uhh” every 2 to 3 words and by 5 minutes into this video I learned absolutely nothing. He spent the first four minutes slowly listing out the tools he will eventually discuss later in the video. Then he spent a full minute reading the different patent engravings on each of his tools and I turned it off. Look this extension says Japan patented 2008 and this one says patented 2005 and this one says patented 2003 and this one doesn’t have a patent year.

I wanted to like him because I’m so curious about koken.

CP the tool baby would be better off if he just stuck to tools. He goes overboard chasing windmills in his one man crusade against Harbor Freight, then hawks Michael Pro, Dynamic, and other imported lines. He was expressing his unhappiness with Capri tools the other day :dunno:
The problem with You Tube tool videos is separating the infomercials from the peeps that use tools as part of their job. Shop tool reviews often strikes a balance between infomercial and his opinion on something. Workshop Addict has some good info at times. Chris Cas mentioned above, introduced to the world of outstanding Japanese made tools that I never knew existed. I've pretty much lost interest in tool truck brands since seeing his videos.

CP made a video about how you can’t buy individual Icon sockets, and then deleted my comment correcting him.

At the start of the video I am totally with him as he points out how annoying it is that you can’t buy singles in store, and how the website doesn’t list individual sockets. Where he lost me is when he said he called their 800 number, and they said no, they won’t sell singles. My reply was about how you can order them, you just have to get the part number off the pdf file from the socket set web page. Dumb system? Totally, but not the point. I ordered a replacement 3/8 drive 9/16 (shallow), and it was fine.

I know some wrenches you can’t buy individually, but he was talking specifically about sockets, and didn’t want to hear otherwise. There were a couple comments pointing out the same thing, to which he told them they’re wrong, asked for a scan of the receipt, or in my case deleted the comment.

It’s fine if he hates HF, whatever, but there is plenty to dislike about the company without blatantly disregarding the truth.

So now CP is attacking other YouTuber's. What the hell is going on in the inter webs.
There seem to be cliques forming in the YouTube tool world. Certain personalities and businesses seem to be going all in together to get at others. I guess that is what happens when you’ve been in the game too long.

I don’t mind too much because some of the criticisms have certainly panned out and some channels and creators I used to watch I have tuned out. I’d probably still be mindlessly watching if not for their little feuds.

The new gem of the internet, Dean Doherty, tool repair God. He fixes tools like no other and also comments on all the dirty tricks of the industry. His channel applies to worldwide because for some crazy law Ireland has both 110 and 220V tools.

Hilti debunked, tools are on timer (service light) where they stop working after a given interval.

He also debunks GJ favourite, Milwaukee tools for what they are, DIY grade. Unless you are in USA with 5yr warranty, Milwaukee are to be avoided as they are essentially DIY grade with no spare parts, not designed to be repaired.
All circuit boards are not potted and they have the tiniest chinesium bearings inside. Example

Another favourite of mine, Makita grinder saved from sunk boat in salt water.
