My dad bought a Yugo 45, seemed like a good idea to him as Zastava had their UK HQ in our town, I tried to warn him and sadly two weeks later they blew up the factory during the Bosnian war! All they were underneath a "restyled" (and I use the term loosely!) body was a Fiat 127 with all the good bits removed!

We also had an FSO/Polski Fiat dealer just down the road, now those made a Lada look reliable!

Found this on C/L:
http://sacramento.craigslist.org/clt/3524278745.html

It is a lighted, 36" x 24" Yugo dealer sign.

A bit too pricey for my shop.

I split a gut laughing when I seen that!! If I would buy that if I won the lottery. Then Halloween nite, I'd set it on your doorstep, knock on the door, and run!! Heck, I would be laughing so dern hard, I wouldn't be able to run.... Anyone else thinking about replicating that size.? Thanks for posting.

Speaking of Yugos....Being auctioned off on Thursday @ Barrett-Jackson in Scottsdale. It's a convertible with 351 original miles. :)

Lot: 722 - 1990 YUGO GVC CONVERTIBLE

Rare convertible and rarer still is the yellow 1990 Cabrio, 1990 was the last year the Yugo was imported. It has just 351 original miles. The Yugo suffered from a well-deserved reputation for poor workmanship. Quality control was virtually unknown and the Yugo was a prime manifestation. Many Yugos began falling apart soon after leaving the showroom and it became the frequent brunt of comedy club humor. The Yugo was vigourously marketed in the late 1980s as a car that would fit into everybody's life, providing basic, economical and reliable transportation along the lines of the Volkswagen Beetle and the earlier Ford Model T. The car was promoted as an uniquely affordable new vehicle, providing an option for buyers who would otherwise have chosen a used vehicle and a reliable second car for wealthier buyers. The Yugo carried the tagline, "Everybody needs a Yugo sometime." This marketing appealed successfully to its target market, as well as wealthier people looking for an affordable second or third car. From the Bob Howard Collection.

Like the car, the sign has depreciated to be worth about $5 max! And like some Yugo owners, the owner of this sign doesn't really understand that...

That sign new wasn't worth that much, used it is worth much less.

I remember years ago when one of the dealers we worked with got a Yugo franchise. He extoled the virtures of this new car, and told me it came with a rear defroster. I said...."that's great...you can keep your hands warm while you push!".

Remember, things sold as "collectible" never are, and "ordinary" things like a Yugo are what in the long run become worth $$$. A convertible models sounds like it would probably have more Yugo-ness than the hardtops. LOL.

I've personally never seen or had a sit down in a Yugo. At a car show if there was a row of Yugo's, Edsels, and AMC Gremelins and Pacers I'd spend way more time checking those out versus a row of f'ed out '69 Camaros and Mustangs. It's happening now at shows with those "boring" 1980's cars.

How do you double the value of a Yugo?
.

Fill the tank.

At gas prices now, a full 6 gallon tank would quadruple the value of that car... As proof of this, mine had a locking gas cap, but no door locks. I had an early 80's p.o.s. Yugo a number of years ago. (I needed a cheap dd while rebuilding the Ranger)

I think my dad's weedeater had a bigger motor than that thing. On cold mornings when trying to go to work, it took me about 3 miles and 10 minutes until the dumb thing warmed up the required 50/20 engine oil enough that it wouldn't stall out when I'd try to grab 2nd gear.

It blew a gasket and the waterpump one day on my way home from work as I was racing a worn out Nissan Sentry up the interstate at about 69 mph. :3gears:
I couldn't believe someone actually paid me $300 to get that little tin can off my hands when I listed it in the Merchandiser.

I thought it would be a cool sign to hang in the shop, because it would start people talking about Yugo's they knew of, just like this thread has done.
If it was $50, I have it already, but not for $450

I remember when they first came to the USA, they were selling new for about $4000.00 I think. Consumer Reports did a test of them and said it was the worst car they'd ever tested. I believe the tooling and was sold to them by Fiat, they were essentialy a 1969 Fiat. I had 2 of them in the shop for clutch replacement.

As for the sign...I'd rather have an Edsel sign

I haven't even heard the name "Yugo" for a long time. I was looking for window mechanisms to be used in my fibre glass doors for a Willys coupe. Roaming thru one of the pick n pulls down near the border in San Ysidro the ones in a BMW looked pretty neat being a cable driven in a casing so they were lite and routeable easily. The downside being BMW they were big $$$ for junk. Spotted a couple Yugo back in the rear of the yard and to my surprise the window mechs appeared same as the BMW stuff. I bought two for $5.00. Still laugh when asked about the window mechs in the doors.

You could probably have that sign reproduced for less than half that price and it would still be worth more than a Yugo.

I drove one a few years back. Some guy bought one dirt cheap and restored it. Why? Ill never know. It was cool to be able to drive though

More jokes (these are of course actually adapted from Skoda jokes of the same period!)

What do you call a Yugo with twin exhausts?...........A wheelbarrow
What do you call a convertible Yugo?........A Skip (dumpster)
How do you make a Yugo hit 60 in under 5 seconds? .....Push it off a cliff
