Closed at the end of June on our house. We have an attached two car, that's pretty much a mess and neglected.

Here's a small list of my minor complaints:
-Not enough light
-Unlevel, pitted floor
-ONE OUTLET!
-Funky wiring
-Wall and ceiling condition

We're ordering a new door and opener on Monday. Once we get that, I'll be more motivated to work around this place.

The backstory is that the previous owners rented it to ****** people. They smoked. So the owners son-in-law, who is just a master of everything, decided he could fix anything. So everything was covered in white paint, which wasn't done well either. Check it out...

Looks like you've got yourself a project. I'm no electrician but even I can see that those switches aren't up to code. And by the way...nice swirl job on the plaster. What do you suppose is under the plywood patch partially covered by the light fixture?
In all seriousness. This is all part of why we like garages. 'Cause we can fix it, and make it our own place. Good luck and keep posting pics.

@turbowoodworker I haven't been in the attic since the home inspection. I need to get up there since it's getting cooler. I want to check wiring up there and add some insulation. I don't want to know what needs to be addressed up there, but I'll be finding out soon. The electrical stuff is bothering me because I want to add outlets and lights and can't even figure out how this is wired. I'll be plotting all the electrical circuits soon.

@tinbender I think it's a plaster. It's cracking and separating from the mortar underneath it. At least it looks like a mortar layer, at least on the exterior walls where the brick is. It's annoying and just a cheap way to cover up things I'm assuming. I just have to talk my wife into letting me clear all the walls and start over in there next summer so that I know how everything was done and done right.

Thanks guys. I'll post any updates I have.

Uhhhh, well, ..... it looks pretty good from the street .....

I've never understood some guys and their electrical work ... the concepts are fairly simple and straight-forward, there are dozens of books on how to do it correctly, and the necessary materials are readily available and inexpensive, but still some guys do their electrical work as if they were morons!

You'll have a nice space once you get it all re-done to your satisfaction.

Just a question, what happens if you put the switch up? That would drive me nuts, I'd be sitting there all day "must not flip switch...."

You have a big project ahead, but it's a nice size garage and will be great once you get it done.

Agree with REPO, gut the garage, sheet rock is not that much if you can do it yourself. THis way you can see whats behind it and do it right. If you have to do it in steps because of money it will still be worth while. I bet the ceiling is two layers of 1/4" sheetrock. Congrats on the new house.

First thing I'd be curious about is that wire under the outlet that's taped off. Kinda looks like somebody at some point might have "plugged it in" directly into the outlet.

Thanks everyone. Yesterday we had PDQ come out to order our new door and opener. We're getting a well insulated door at an R value of about 17. And I'm getting the LiftMaster 3800 Jackshaft opener! Pretty excited about this. We went this route because of the one outlet and its convenient location to the opener. And I'm a little worried about the structural integrity of the ceiling.

Hopefully I get more done over the winter. I'll update with pics when they install the door. Hopefully they'll install on Halloween.
