The start of my man cave/ workshop/ car storage/ many many more. This has been a dream of mine for years. I had another garage, 1600 sq ft, however with a short 8 foot ceiling as well as it not being near my house, it was time to build a garage at my home.

Building Began in Early 2012 Jan, thankfully we got a few weeks of great weather with no snow, and they began. Complete construction of the building itself was only 2 weeks. 30X40 with 12 foot ceilings.

I am attempting to upload photos, but it seems I am missing a security TOKEN.

Building is sided and generally completed, waiting on Garage door to come in, as well as the ground to thaw so we can get some concrete poured.

We got a rather awesome couple of weeks in the 70's in March, so they could pour. highest PSI concrete, 4" with 6 mill plastic underneath as well as 2" compression foam.

Then the digging began on for the electrical. Yes we dug it by hand, I really wish I would have rented a trencher as this was a huge undertaking, but a good day we had it ready for the electricians. 21" deep per Code.

Yes that is the back door of my front garage. We are doing a drive thru garage. Alot of the contractors were itching to tear it down, but I couldn't as I wanted the most storage and such as possible.

Picked up 8 of these shelves from a local dealership that went under, for a steal. Will be repaiting them.

Epoxy Floor all done. Commercial Grade Sherwin Williams product, the one that only certified installers can get. They did an excellent job.

We will be doing a two tone paint scheme, darker gray on the bottom, and white on top, also will be getting 1X6 chair rail height all around just below outlets (possibly paint a dark red, or hugger orange to match Chevelle)

Man great Garage! I will be building the same size in about 6 months. I wanted it like yours, with one garage door at the end but I haven't really found any like this on here. After seeing yours with the cars in there I feel better about doing it this way. One question. I am still not sure if I want to go steel sides or vinyl. Was there much of a price difference? By the way great cars!

Did you caulk or do something with the seams before priming the OSB? How bad was the coverage on the paint? I'm still debating between drywall and OSB.....

The price difference was actually at the time, cheaper for Vinyl, because of the cost of steel. Plus I was told Vinyl is better if your going to heat it, as moisture issues aren't as bad with OSB and Vinyl as it is with metal. As for the big door, I like it, however it does change temperature in the whole garage alot when you open the door, I originally had spec with 2 10X8 Doors in the front, but switched due to the cost (two doors and 2 openers), when I get my 4 post lifts, I think 2 doors would have been nicer for lining up directly in front of the lifts, However the big door does make it much easier to angle trailers and cars in and out of the garage, without worrying about mirrors and wheel wells.

We caulked the corners, and then we painted with Oil Based Killz, first coat was spotty, but after that coat we went back through and all the seems that showed we caulked the cracks and it looks great after the second coat. We did do "smooth" side out, and only took 2 coats of Killz. (2 X 5 gallons) which is 2/3rds of the garage, the front is getting finished this weekend, and will probably take another 5 gallon. We are planning on painting over the killz as with any primer its flat, and we want a semi gloss for clean-ability. Plus doing 2 tone color scheme. I prefer OSB, I went back and forth on it, but in reality, with paint you have the same money into it as if you were painting drywall, plus you have to pay someone to finish the drywall, if you want it to look have decent, or if you do it yourself you need to figure quite a long time to mud, sand, mud, sand and sand some more. Plus I wanted to be able to screw anywhere I wanted to. The other downside, even thou my barn will be heated, I didn't want to have to guarantee it, as finished drywall can't take the temperature swings. You can't even tell its OSB, until you get close to it, and then it only looks like a textured wall. I would go OSB, especially if you can wait for it to come down in price. I paid 11.33 a sheet of 7/16's, that same day it went up in our area to $16.97, and is still above 11.33.

The Color is going on, 2/3rds of the shop is covered (OSB), and we just finished framing and insulating and plasticing the rest. It was 32 degrees outside today, and inside the shop, it was 53 degrees, thats with no heat as of yet. Pretty good I would say.

Bottom is a DARK ASH -- Dark Gray, top is a slight off white. We will be doing either a hugger orange, or a corvette red 1X6 board all the way around the shop, breaking up the white and gray. Its amazing how much smaller it looks with it framed in, but the amount of insulation makes it a lot better temperature wise as well as sound proof. Use to be able to hear the radio from outside the garage, now you can't hear it at all, even with it cranked up.

The level of insulation for a simple garage is massive, but as stated well worth it - Make sure you have good ventilation too if you start doing heavy work and get dust/paint in the air.
Do you plan on keeping it 'cool' also during the summer, besides the fan?

Yeah, When we put in the Furnace, I am going to do an A-COIL so that next year (spring time) We can put in a central air unit outside. Based on how well we sealed it up and the fact it is holding over 20 degrees higher then outside, shouldn't take much to heat and cool, so that's a good thing. We got 2 windows on the south side, so we can crack those for ventilation.

Got the rest of the plastic and insulation done.

Plus I noticed most of my pictures of interior have been from the service door, so here are some better pics of all around.

Finally all the walls are officially up, everything is painted. Thankfully will not have to smell killz for a very long time, that stuff is strong.

Your garage looks good. I have been very undecided and have been contemplating what to hang on the walls in my shop and now you convinced me after seeing your painted osb. Your paint scheme looks great btw. My shop is 1200sq/ft also. How you injoying all that space? Two lifts hey? Were the lifts new or used?? just curious why they are different.

Lifts were brand new, did the different kinds, because the one is just a parking lift, and the bendpak is a commercial style, mainly will be doing a lot of work on the bendpak. They were suppose both suppose to be black, but they came the way they did and i didnt feel like dealing with it mainly because they drove a long way to install. The OSB is so much easier to work with, smooth side out, and 2 coats of killz oil based, then a coat of whatever latex, semi gloss, and it looks awesome.

That was my struggle back and forth, there are pro's and con's to both, but I felt the better bet was OSB, because I wanted to put things up, no matter where a stud was, as well didn't want to go throught the huge process of having the drywall finished, the sanding and mudding would takes forever, and I pretty much just thought to myself, its a shop, and having the walls with a little texture doesn't bother me. The only thing I would do now, is just check pricing for OSB, we used 7/16s and the day after I bought it, it went up almost $9, granted that was around the storm season.

Wow your right they look very alike. I like your big door, Originally we had mine to have 2 8X10 doors, but I changed order, after figuring cost for each opener, and door, as well as having storage, having the middle empty doesn't really allow for benches and such. I went with a craftsman door opener, the one that can be controlled by a smartphone and has battery backup, the thing makes my life so much easier. . I like your white corners, it sets it off.

Added some shelves, and got a cool new coat rack from the GF, to add. Hopefully will have the gas line ran soon, with the "WINTER" here, it has been difficult, so hopefully they can get the trench out soon.

Got the gas line ran, and the furnace installed. Went with a 185K Hot Dawg, it does a great job keeping temperature. I keep it at 46 when I am not out there, and usually if I turn it up to 60 its too warm to work on cars, even in a t-shirt. We sealed it up so well and with the concrete insulation, there are no drafts so its very comfortable. Had many the parties thus far out there, and it works out nicely. As well as been able to work on all my vehicles in comfort. I have a WIRELESS thermostat, which was well worth the money, when I am coming home from my office and want to work out in the garage I just turn the thermostat up via my smart phone, and it works great.

I was kicking around the idea of using osb on the walls inside my garage. After looking through your pics I have decided to go ahead and do it.

Did you screw it or nail it? Did you putty the holes before painting, or just paint over?

I used standard drywall screws. We did the first coat of Killz primer, and filled the holes with paint the best we could, then before the second coat just went through with caulk and filled any holes that you could still see, and can cracks/or spots of the primer being unleveled boards, it turned out great, and way less work then drywall, as well as a way more durable, I have not regretted my decision to go with OSB
