ZB Garage - 22 x 22

Hey GJ, my name is Zach and I just purchased my first home. It's a ranch-style house with an attached two car garage (22 x 22). Growing up we never had a garage and it's always been a goal of mine to have one and make it my own. I have big plans for this garage and thought it would be a good idea to document the journey on this forum.

The previous owner left the garage in decent shape. It's got some older wooden cabinets throughout, a makeshift workbench in the back, a central vac in the back right corner, and some wall racks for hanging things. The lighting is relatively new and definitely illuminates the space well. The floor is in decent shape and there is a recessed drain in the center.

My goal for this garage is to create a user-friendly workspace that's organized and efficient and allows me to work on a variety of automotive/household projects.

Initial Improvement Plans:

• Remove old cabinets and workbench
• fix sheetrock on back and left side walls
• setup new workbench area along back wall
• fix and apply coating to floor
• new storage cabinets (suggestions welcome)
• new toolbox (tall and slim or short and wide?)

This project will be a slow and steady progression and I will update as much as I can. I'm sure I'll find tons of ideas and inspiration on this site and I will update the improvements list as I go.

I think short and wide works better personally. But that is just it. PERSONALLY. It all depends on what works for you ;-)

Recently I spent a good amount of time trying to decide on a toolbox for the new garage. The only toolbox I've ever had was an old Craftsman top and bottom chest set (you can see the top on my workbench) that was a gift from my dad when I was about 14.

I was deciding between the HF 44", HF 56", and the 52" flat black husky box from HD (just the bottom). I ended up going with the HF 44" box, like a lot of other members on here:



But..... once I got it home and started filling it with tools, it was full before I had half my tools in it, leaving no room to expand. I called up HF and asked if they would let me return the 44" in exchange for the 56" and they were happy to.

To make the return and pickup of the new box easier I rented a small utility trailer with a ramp from Uhaul. A friend and I rolled the 44" up into the trailer and drove to HF. When we got there the manager said they had 2 56" boxes in stock, but the packaging and pallet they were on were damaged. He asked me to come in back and open each box to make sure there wasn't any damage before I took it home. The first box had the top from corners of the chest bent up (under the aluminum trim and the lack plastic caps had broken off), but it wasn't anything that couldn't be fixed. Also, the bottom drawer had a slight dent in it that didn't affect it's functionality. The second box was in a lot rougher shape. The back of it had a huge dent near the top, none of the drawers would open, and the vertical divider between the drawers seemed to be cocked to the side.

Due to the damage, the a manager asked how much I wanted to pay. We settled on $500 for the box that was in better shape. He then said that since the other box was so damaged, he wouldn't be able to do anything with it and to just "take it" and see if I could fix it myself. I was ecstatic because I knew that with a little time and effort I could get it back into operable condition. We loaded both boxes onto the trailer and brought them home.
