Asking due to curiosity, what's special about them ?

they use a steel tang/barb or whatever you want to call it (lol) inside the head VS the plastic one in the cheaper ones. i use these for outside the car/truck and on my commercial trucks. for inside stuff i just use the cheap ones. these also do better in the sun.

T&B makes white zips that cannot be put out in the sun, as well as the black ones that are UV resistant. That goes for most brands of zip ties though.

My experience has been that on decent zip ties, the band breaks before the tooth. Because of that, and because the metal tooth actually puts more stress on the band, the metal toothed ties are actually weaker than premium ties with a plastic dog.

OTOH, T&B uses the best quality nylon out there, so you know that if you're using a TyRap, it's still pretty damned good (I have 30 year old ones that are still as strong and supple as new). As opposed to **** brand ties that are brittle as toast.

However, my recommendation would be to go with a high quality all plastic band (T&B makes these too), unless you need the metal tooth for compliance purposes (mil spec, aviation, etc.).

Good thread. I use zip-ties when transporting my kayaks, to secure my ratchet strap ends to the trailer. If a strap loosens, it won't dangle off the trailer and wrap around an axle. Also, because we now have 6 kayaks, I have one kayak on top, so after strapping that one in, I secure it with a strong bungee on one end and simply zip-tie the other end to the lifted gate of the trailer. I was mainly using Dollar Store ties, because why not? They work great, but the tie on the top kayak did break off. I was actually driving behind my wife, who was towing the trailer, and I saw the green tie fly off. Of course, I live by the mantra, "2 is one, 1 is none", so the second tie held just fine.

Still, I've thought about upgrading the ties I use for the top kayak. Good to know the name of a quality tie.

The 27" 250 pound rated wraps are great.. use to give those out to the police when they would do traffic control for use. They'd use em as hand and leg cuffs.. the things are practically unbreakable.

Personally I think the T&B ****. That's what we have at work and to me, you can't pull them real tight. For home I have been buying the Gardner Bender extreme ties. Those so far seem to be good all around. Their standard series gets way to brittle to use under 30°.

I carry 36 and 48 inch zip ties in my truck for occasional use tying stuff down or together.

I had 8 12 foot 2x12s to transport last week - they stick out the back about 4 feet - I just zip tied them together and they weren't likely to move around.

btw one of my go to tools is the Klein zip tie tool. I've seen several other brands that look similar, but the klein works great, so I haven't used them.

For wider zip ties that one works good. I have the malco version and use it on the 36 and 48" zip ties for heat ducts.

But for smaller zip ties used around the house and automotive uses I have this gun for 20 years now and love it, https://www.bgbsupply.com/product/P...o2&scid=scplp07498375817&sc_intid=07498375817

Have you guys tried Harbor Freight Zipties, they work fine.

I've found them hit or miss.
One batch fell apart before they even started to get tight. Some would snap as you bent them around before they were even closed.

Really, if you want it to last, I'd avoid these. For tying up cords to keep stuff from being tangled in storage, sure.

Cops use the metal toothed ones as handcuffs, for some reason.

I would guess that it's more tamper resistant. With the all plastic ties, you can shove something in them to get them to back out.

Side note on UV light. I use a lot nylon braided hose and my hose supplier said the further you get from black, the more UV will affect them. That certainly explains why the clear nylobraid I use gets hard after a couple of years.

If you are looking to get pissed off, buy Harbor Freight zip ties. They are guaranteed , have a 5 star rating. You even get the piss you off feature with all model numbers and can use a 20% off coupon.

That said- I’m looking for my next 5000 pack to last the next 10 years

I love the T&B Ty-Raps, too. I'm somewhat indifferent to the metal tooth thing, but they are definitely made from much stronger nylon than any others I've tried. They're also smoother, and thus a little easier to work with and less damaging to your wires or whatever.

The HF cheapies aren't worth bothering with under any circumstances. Weak and brittle. Even if you're just bundling wires, you'll get tired of them.

Online, you have to do a little digging on Amazon and buy in bulk to find actual Ty-Raps at a decent price. (Lots of people advertise their no-name shite using the Ty-Rap trademark, so beware.)

Locally, I visit "Earl's Indy", a race shop down in Speedway. They have great prices on Ty-Raps. Plus, I like actually seeing and holding what I'm buying -- it's tough to order by dimension when you're not 100% certain how you'll be using them.

Anybody seen or used or have a comment on this type? These are what you get from Volvo, if you buy a kit that requires tying up wires, like a trailer hitch harness.

The rectangular end (first pic shows it better) is free to float between the end and the spot marked with a green arrow. You "tie" it as shown in the 3rd pic were smaller teeth the length of the tie engage with the larger teeth shown in the 1st pic.

Be aware Thomas and Betts make two types of ties - The original w the stainless tooth, and a lower line version w/o. Marc

In my experiences, "Ty-Raps" w the metal tooth are far superior to any others in ALL ways.
