Mark, thank you for the comments and for understanding.

My wife has always made sure we have dinner as a family and any big decisions in our life we talked about as a family. My wife also had a saying that she used a lot that the family who plays together, stays together. Whenever and whatever we were doing as extra-curricular activities, being racing, duning, snowmobiling, RV'ing and Jeeping, we did it all as a family.

Speaking of the extra-curricular....wife and I always made it a point to be at every type of event, whether it be sports or school for the kids. While they might not have appreciated it then, they knew we were there and also when their friends parents were or weren't there. It made an impression on them. My mother, who we called the Merry Widow after my father passed away, never gave them much time. We could never get on her schedule for family time. The kids have no good lasting memories of doing stuff with her nor do they have much of a relationship with her. I NEVER want to do that to my kids or their children!

Agreed Mark.

Whenever my son wanted to play sports we had two rules in our house. First, if he starts something he WILL finish it. No quitting halfway through because it either gets too hard or lost interest. If you start it, you finish it.

Second rule, his mother and I are just as vested as he is. We will be there as well. While my wife was late to a few games and parent teacher conferences, I NEVER missed a single one and was usually helping the other parents either coaching or assisting somehow. Whatever work I had going on in the shop always waited until we got home AFTER his games. Granted I had some late nights in the shop after dinner and my son was off to bed but looking back I think it was all worth it. Those are the things I hope if anyone was to ask him he would remember.

I never understood those who dropped their kids off and then left but I'm not in their shoes and not responsible for them. I was generally the dad who ended up driving all of the neighbor kids home after games but again, I'm not accountable for anyone but myself. I also assisted with Boy Scout outings for a short time as I didn't trust any other leaders with my son's well being. Maybe I did or didn't do him any favors on some of those but it was what I felt was best.

We have done this as well...more so my wife than me as I work out of town more than most but I would be there when I could and they all knew that.

This has just started to bite us in the *** here recently. Step daughter who is now 23 is expecting and planning all the showers and whatnot that goes on nowadays with it. So she calls and tells the wife the date of her baby shower and the wife immediately responds “well did you check with any of your family to make sure they will be able to make it before you set the date”? Her response was “y’all are always there...”

Wouldn’t change it and don’t regret it, and a lot of it has to do with her personality (blonde), but it can happen.

I'm in this stage of life now. My oldest daughter is doing gymnastics and swim school, which means I'm there with her. As much as I'd like to be at home doing stuff I like to do, it's definitely more important that my kids have parents that give a ****. I remember how hard my dad worked at being involved in our activities, so I know it's important to her as well. It takes it toll, but eventually the day will come when I have more free time. I'm just hoping my youngest daughter will want to get into some type of motorsports.

Good for you BB&G. I wish my dad would have seen me play football at least once in Jr. High or High School but being a farmer he didn't have any free time. My dad did the best he could and I'm proud to be his son but I was always envious of my team mates who's dad's were there. Football wasn't really all that important to me but because I was born and raised on a farm and was built like a brick ********* the coaches wanted me to play and I was decent at it but it wasn't that big of a deal in my life like most of my team mates. I could take it or leave it and once I started driving football went by the wayside and I never played my Jr. or Sr. year and didn't miss it so I can't complain.

What I did learn from my dad was that hard work and persistence paid off and once I started wrenching on vehicles and found my passion, he was on board with that 100% and very supportive. That I won't forget but I also told myself I would be different with my son or daughter and work wouldn't come first. That is harder said than done when bills come in and debts need to be paid but I have been very blessed in that respect and kept things in check.

You will get more time as life goes on trust me, but then you get to the point I'm at now and I have all this time and missing the shop time with my son so enjoy it while you can.

Thanks for following along and I appreciate the comments.

A week with no updates...everything ok Mike?

I think the father of the groom has been abducted. Probably welding and machining beautiful centerpieces for the reception.

Thanks for thinking of me guys.

The wife and I just took a few days off and went out of town for the Memorial weekend. Funny we haven't gone anywhere on holiday weekends since my son graduated high school, now we try to avoid the holiday weekends. My wife wanted to get away as this was the only weekend she had without any plans until after the wedding and we both needed a vacation.

Now for the recap of the weekend getaway.

We were on our way to Afton, WY. My sister and BIL had a cabin up in Star Valley from the mid 80's through 2000 so the wife and I spent a lot of time up there from the late 80's through the late 90's. My BIL died of cancer in 2001 and they sold their cabin just prior to his passing. He was a great guy, treated my sister fantastic and was an all around fun guy to be around. We would usually go up to their cabin 3-5 times a year so we became somewhat familiar with the area. That was where I learned to fly fish and tie flies, although it lost its luster and I had no further desire to fish after my BIL passed.

We were looking for somewhere to go and my wife suggested Afton seeing as how we waited too long to make reservations at any of our usual places and they were all booked.

We left Thursday morning with my in-laws following us with their truck and 5'er. We decided to go over and through Logan Canyon to Montpelier, ID seeing as how there was a wind advisory and the interstate was closed at Tremonton, UT. It was just raining and we are very familiar with the route.

HOWEVER, as soon as we turned up the canyon the rain turned to light snow. By the time we passed the chain up area it was a full blown blizzard but the roads were only slushy. Well that changed as soon as we passed the chain up area.:wtf:

The roads quickly got snow-packed then icy with snow on top. The pavement disappeared and I was following ruts in the snow as by now there was about 3" of snow on top of hardpack or ice. We were approaching the summit and just prior to the summit is a state shed where they dispatch snow plows out of. I figured if we could get to the rest area/pullout at the top of the pass then we could wait it out as it is an 8% grade dropping down into Garden City/Bear Lake area and I didn't want to descend that with snow packed roads.

Just as we were passing the state shed I slowed slightly to allow a couple of cars to pass. I began accelerating to get some speed up for the last 1-mile to the summit. That is when I lost traction and spun my tires. I tried again and simply spun my drives. I applied the brakes and the coach started sliding backwards down the highway. My first thought was I was going to get tangled up with the Jeep in which we were towing because anyone who has ever flat-towed knows, you don't back up a flat-towed vehicle.

I set the e-brake the coach started sliding as soon as I released the pedal. The e-brake only locks the drive axle so I had to have my wife slide into the driver's seat and hold her foot on the brake while I went out to disconnect the Jeep. My thinking was as soon as I shed the 6k pounds of dead weight I could get going again and make it to the summit rest area.

My wife was nervous as hell but she was a trooper and held the brakes while I went outside to disconnect. Here is where the plot thickens, with the Jeep hanging off the back of the coach down hill, I couldn't release the tension on the tow bar to disconnect the pins. I had to get creative and use the safety cables to wrap around the levers to hold the release while I started the Jeep and moved forward about 4 inches to gain slack in the tow bars, this is after clearing the 2+ inches of snow off of the Jeep of course.

I was able to disconnect the Jeep and run it about 100-yards up the highway to a wide spot, barely wide enough for the Jeep, in which I figured I would have my wife follow me with.

After shedding the weight of the Jeep it still wouldn't progress. I tried backing up a couple of feet but could only progress a few inches. At this point I sat back and told the wife I was at a loss and didn't know what to do. She said she had never heard me say that and to be honest, didn't feel good having to say.:lol_hitti

While I was sitting there for what seemed like half an hour but realistically only a minute or two I noticed that a large front end loader was coming from the state shed with a bucket full of sand. He pulled up the front of me and commenced shaking the bucket to disperse a trail of sand about 100 feet in front of me. The problem was I couldn't get to it and he was driving away. I went outside the coach and started grabbing handfuls of sand and throwing them under my drive tires.

Then here he came with another scoop and pulled up behind me to dispense about a half a bucket 30 or so feet behind me. I backed up onto the sanded area behind me while he dumped the remainder of the bucket where the coach was stopped. I figured this would allow me a run at the hill but I still worried about the 8% descent down into Garden City. I stopped to thank him and while I was standing there a snowplow pulled out of the state shed and hit the road with plow down and sand coming out of the sander just ahead of me where the loader had put sand. I hopped in the coach, the wife hopped in the Jeep and we progressed up the grade fairly trouble free.

I was going to stop at the rest area at the top of the summit but it was unplowed as well with about 8 inches of freshly fallen snow and I just figured the snow plow was ahead of me and I would take it slow going down the grade and it was pretty uneventful from there. As soon as we got down into Garden City the snow turned to rain and we stopped and reconnected the Jeep and proceeded on our way to Afton, WY.

That was one for the books for sure. My wife and I were joking about the sequence of events and how fortunate we were that it happened where it did and that the state employees were as great as they were and came to our aid when she mentioned that we didn't even take any pictures. I told her I was a little busy trying to figure out a way out to take pictures but now looking back that would have made for a great post.:lol_hitti

Once we arrived at our destination it was relaxing and mostly rain all weekend but it didn't keep us from exploring and sightseeing. On Saturday we decided to take a nice drive up into Teton NP and all in all a nice getaway once we arrived.

This is why I love winter...it pushes us outside of our comfort zone and increase our wealth of knowledge on how to accomplish impossible tasks...

Nice recovery Mike...well done...

I had a parallel experience in Kansas City pulling a Trailer behind the Coach...no mountains but 1 inch plus of ice on the freeway...lets just say my "cheek muscles" were a little sore of a few days...

Figures though that out of EVERYBODY on the forum, you would chime in about how wonderful winter is.....:bounce:

As for my "comfort zone", I was quite comfortable inside the nice warm confines of our coach prior to getting stuck.:lol_hitti

So the in laws had no issues?

What a pucker pincher! [emoji15]

No, my FIL really didn't have any issues other than he had to use 4WD due to the slick roads.

Yes, there was puckering involved.:bounce:

I should consider myself fortunate because in all of the years I have been hauling big enclosed trailers around and RV'ing, this was the first time I have ever been stuck. Even from back when we were snowmobiling heavily, I never had an issue with getting stuck in either my truck or any of my motorhomes and we were not merely fair weather travelers so I should be counting my luck that this was the first time.

I'm sure you could handle swapping in an appropriate front drive axle and transfer case into your coach, if you wanted to.
And swap the tag axle for another drive as well and have a 6x6.
:)
Glad you didn't get squished between your coach and jeep.

Lucky for you. Glad it all worked out for ya.
Sliding in those conditions in a single vehicle is hard enough but with a large rv and towing...phew.

Thanks Justin. Don't think I'll be modding the coach, it will be easier to just avoid snow.

As for being squished between the two, yes that was my concern and why I had my wife glued to the backup monitor and I definitely had a heightened awareness of the situation vs. when I normally connect/disconnect the Jeep. It was a little spooky being between the two.

I appreciate the comments. I was more worried about my newly built Jeep and my freshly painted coach than my safety at the time. Besides, there were only a few other idiots on the road so at least there wasn't a lot of traffic.:lol_hitti

Drive your Jeep down to Moab, there is nobody here!

Well that *****. We were in Moab in April and it was much busier than I had expected even though I was able to find an RV site. When the wife and I decided to go somewhere only about three weeks ago I had called a couple of campgrounds that we like in the Capitol Reef area and all were booked, I also called several in Moab and all said they were booked so I'm shocked to hear there is nobody there. I wonder if the weather scared people away last minute? Although I've been to Moab even in very foul weather and it is still busy as hell.

Thanks guys. Just to put that to rest, no 6x6 mods to the coach, she's fine the way she is.

Although many years ago when I had our first motorhome a friend of mine had a 1984 Ford Class C that he had swapped a newer IFS (Dana 50) under it from a late 80's 3/4-ton Ford truck. It was pretty cool but an awful lot of work for something that I felt netted minimal benefits. It was a 26' Class C and still too large to take off-road much. It worked well at the sand dunes however. I just stayed on the hard pack and avoided the soft sand.

As I was reading the part where your wife was standing on the brakes I thought you were going to jump out of the RV and then go use the jeep to help pull the RV up the grade. With the jeep's low-range and 4wd engaged it just might have been enough help the RV needed?

Nope. No chains on my RV. Fenders and skirtings are too much $$$$ to repair. In all honesty in the 25+ years of RV'ing and 150k+ miles I've driven our RV's, this is the first time I have been stuck so I will stick with my odds.

I guess that was an option but I think it would have been too much stress on the tow bar. Besides that would mean the wife would have to drive the coach and she has a standing rule, she doesn't drive the coach.:lol_hitti

In all of those 150k miles over 25+ years of RV'ing this has only been the third time I have had to disconnect the Jeep due to an issue. The first one was a wrong turn into a cul-de-sac and I couldn't make the turn and the second was at a fuel stop in a small town when the delivery truck showed up while I was fueling and blocked me in. Now this one where I had to disconnect due to being stuck so again, pretty good odds.

I didn’t get any shop time tonight because it was the first day in over a week we haven’t had any rain and I hadn’t mowed my lawn for 10 days. It was in desperate need of some attention. It took me much longer than normal due to the length and how thick the front lawn has become.

It took an hour alone just to trim, edge and walk around once with my 21” walk-behind whereas usually that takes about 25 minutes.

I then raised the deck up another notch on my 42” Toro ZTR and had to go very slow which took an hour and a half when I can usually run around it in about 50 minutes.

I think it was worth it because it looks amazing. We are just entering our third summer in our home and the yard I’m finally pretty pleased with the way the yard looks.

There’s still a few mushrooms from all of the moisture but I’m pretty happy with it.

Thanks for looking.

Yard looks great.
Maybe someday those trees will be large enough to string a hammock between them and you can use for relaxing.
