To read the article you have to subscribe or sign in.

Sorry, if you google the title below and click on the WSJ result it allows you to read the full article. There are more recent articles on Jet but this one is quite interesting.

Wow, that article is a blast straight back to 1999-level stupidity. I can't imagine they're still manually transducing orders at a loss w/o partnership agreements.

This could probably become new thread, but I want to discuss Zoro prices and deals.

Has anyone else noticed an increase in some of Zoro's prices recently? I've noticed a toolbox I recently purchased went up by $370. A socket set I recently purchased went up by $20. And some ratcheting wrench sets that I left in my cart have gone up by $10. Too bad I didn't snag them before the price increase.
So I question the recent price increases. Is Zoro a top seller now and can start increasing their prices due to their store specific demand? They are still some of, if not the best prices around. Throw in the promos and their's no comparison. Hope the price increases will stop and settle out here for another year or so. And I'm really hoping the deals train is not coming to a full halt.
Speaking of the deals; did anyone else get a survey specifically referring to their promo deals this morning? I did and I filled it out. I wont disclose my answers (I really don't remember them all) but want to hear other opinions and thoughts on Zoro's recent little revamping of things.

I find Zoro's prices are often pretty high on a lot of tools, compared to other sites. The 25% off helps to make some purchases a good deal, and so I'll purchase when it makes sense.

For example, I just used a 25% off code to buy a new chain saw (Echo CS 590). I could buy it locally at a dealer for an everyday price of $389.99, plus tax, which is a lot of saw for the money. Zoro's regular price for this saw is $431.59, which is pretty high! I believe that's over msrp... But, with the coupon, damned tax, and free shipping it came to $345 shipped; good deal.

Echo's doing this one day, 20% off (msrp) deal, but I would have had to wait until sometime in June for my local dealer to have the promo. So, I took the Zoro deal because I've got some work to do now. With the 25% off code through Zoro I ended up paying about $4 more than the local deal would have been if I had waited. But, Zoro got me the saw within two days, and I already finished my project (before it gets too hot around here....). I would have liked to buy through the local guy, but couldn't wait for the deal, and money is very tight right now.

So, you do need to be sure to compare prices, because they can be pretty high at Zoro. The 25% coupon usually can make up for this, and you can get a decent deal. I hate that I have to pay state tax with Zoro, you guys that don't have it good...

And yes, I got the survey, as well. Told them their prices were high, so they should send the 25% coupons more often, and have them last longer!

BTW, Echo makes a great saw, best bang for the buck IMO. I've got a Stihl and now a couple of Echos, and I am very pleased with the quality/performance of the Echos.

DMAR, zoro also offers a lot of items at competitive or and in a lot of cases they are the cheapest, as always you have to look around and do your homework. I have been dealing with zoro for a while now and if they are close on price, I would use them over another online retailer because of the customer service they offer. If there is ever any issue, they fix it and they fix it right. This thread used to be about the actual deals, now it is about coupon codes only. After Rocket had some issues with other members, he deleted a lot of the original content and we lost touch with what this thread was about.

Thanks Strouty, I agree that Zoro is great to deal with, and I always get my order within a day, or two. I also like how they approach their business, and try to be in tune with their customers, you really don't see that much with Internet companies...

To your point on good pricing on some items, I wish that we could have more people posting deals that they see on Zoro, other than just the coupon codes. I find their website a bit tedious to search, so I'd be all over being able to see some links to deals!

Is there a general rule of thumb for what Zoro is good for, price-wise? The only things that I have ever bought from them were a couple of Amerex Fire Extinguishers. Those were at a great price point, even without coupon codes.

But everything that I have looked at recently seem to be at a higher price than most sellers (looking for Woodford hot/cold frost proof silcocks currently).

So what are your go-to Zoro items?

Zoro, as a part of Grainger, is in the business of industrial supply.

Tool distribution happens as a result, but isn't their focus, they'll never meet what CPO/Home Depot/Sears will do in volume, nor do they participate in manufacturer supported marketing offers that are often offered, so pricing will be mediocre at best. The only times it makes sense is the 20-30% off, which Zoro probably eats the entirety of the cost for, which is why they are as rare as they are.

You'll find the best deals in things you'd buy at an industrial supplier; their pricing is always below what Grainger has, and then the 20-30% on top is icing on the cake. I've had good luck w/ PPE items (gloves, safety glasses, earplugs), consumables (sandpaper, paint supplies), drill bits, pipe/pipe fittings, nuts/bolts/other hardware, etc.

Well, Grainger's pricing is pretty elastic. As I understand it they have substantial discounts for major and even middling accounts.

The nice thing about their Zoro side is that you don't have to have a big account to get reasonable pricing. I just wish their selection was a bit deeper. Grainger has a bunch of storefronts, e.g. Techni-Tool, each with somewhat different selections, which is frankly a pain.

If I'm not mistaken, there should be a mass e-mail sent out soon for their Spring Sale. keep an eye out for a coupon which should entitle you anywhere from a 15% to 25% off discount

This gets posted on nearly every page on this thread...I'd suggest just waiting for May 19th:

May 19 - 25% off $175+ - Code BLOSSOM
June 27 - 20% off $200+ - Code WARMINGUP
July 18-19 - $50 off $250+ - Code COOKOUT

^^^Its got to be 60 tooth, as per the description on Amazon.

Balls. HJE is selling the 88t version, but they are out of stock. Something to do with a warehouse flood, I believe.

Confusingly, they are the same part number.

Are you still able to order on HJE though? The only difference will be the time it takes to process the order.

Yes, I believe so.

Interestingly, the more recent reviews on Amazon say they received the 88t version. Since Armstrong put out the news release on December 2014, all the NOS must have cleared out in the following months. It might be a safe bet to go ahead and order from Zoro.

If memory serves me right the last 30% Zoro coupon (Nov 2015 Cyber Monday), was preceded by a 25% one a week or so before. I'm thinking there is a chance they do a 30% promo for Memorial day or a week or so before fathers day. If it happens its going to be a 1 day deal not a weekend long thing.

I bought a 3/8 non-flex Armstrong MAXX ratchet (11-992) from Zoro last year, and it was 88-tooth. I opened it up to verify.

Zoro'a page says it drop ships from the manufacturer. So that makes sense they would be shipping the 88t by now. Guess I'll throw all three in the cart.

I was just telling my brother that I remembered the same. I wouldn't doubt it at all if you are right... But am I willing to risk a substantial wait if we are wrong.

LOL... I ran into the same dilemma back then, $350 order under the 25% cause I really needed the stuff and couldnt chance how much longer until 30%, though I did order some nice things on the 30% too.

I especially liked 30% off with no minimum for Free Shipping. Recall Black Friday from last, amazing time it was.

25 or 30%... not sure its worth the risk for 5%. If you really need something and even if you don't 5% shouldn't make a difference. I'm curious if my wish list stuff has gone up in price though.

Been waiting awhile for this coupon, only to find out they charge sales tax. Between that and their high prices, it's no cheaper than anywhere else, even with the coupon.
