Well, the video production quality was satisfyingly good, and the accompanying soundtrack was therapeutic.

I'm sure that it's going to do just fine as a marking knife, but that heat treatment of HSS was kind of painful to watch. My suggestion for his next project would be to use a piece of steel cable to make a "damascus" marking knife. He's already done most of the work, and could skip the plastidip step.

That was a cool video.....I have a cigar box full of old drill bits. Hmmm...... I might have to give that a try this winter. Thanks Ryan.

So I know I'm a newbie at heat treating, but what was he using the toaster oven for? I thought since he already heated the bit up with MAP gas, that it was heat treated.

Cool video. The one thing I hate about youtube is, the second some people get in front of a camera they become worse than late night infomercial host's, completely tossing out all if any educational value. This was great, short and to the point....get it? point :lol_hitti

Y'all would cry if you saw me make a knife. I use old vanadium wrenches for knives and 3lb hammers for axes. They're garage sale finds and usually black oxide, broken, or abused. But some guys get weirdly emotional when they first hear about my hobby.

HSS and anything with a bunch of moly in it is pretty low on my list of candidates.

I personally took great value in the complete lack of a soundtrack. Not even background noise.
Simple project, simple production.
Well done sir!

Wrong End.....the back ends of the drills have a mild steel slug friction welded to them so that they are held in drill chucks a little easier....so that it bites down into it and also so they are not as brittle as the business end. I don't know that will hold and edge at all or that your heat treating did anything to the steel at that end....oops!!
