Jack Stand Storage

Jack stands are a total pain is the *** to have around… I guess that’s why so many numbskulls are killed every year by their absence – they are just sick of dealing with them. “BB767” however, is here to save lives. How? By doing the obvious – building a simple interface to store and keep jacks stands out of the way, but still have them accessible.

Great idea. Looks like it would be quick and simple to make and he would always know where the stands were. That guy has done a lot of great work in his shop. The whole thing is over 300 pages long but it's good reading. I'm getting through it a little at a time.

Sorry, but I gotta disagree. To me that would be a horrible waste of space. I just take out the center and stack them all out of the way. Best I could come up with.

It's a great idea for keeping those toe busters out of the way and clean, but you had better concentrate and prepare for the weight when grabbing one from an upper shelf :eyecrazy:

I just put them in a cubby under some shelving with half of them upside down, two triangles "facing" each other makes a neat parallelogram and dont take up 1/4 the space of a dedicated cabinet. I dont have the luxury of a big shop or multiple buildings, so for me space is more important than getting fancy.

I built some custom sized shelving to hold 3 pair on the top, an extra jack in the middle and my regular use jack stores under it. Bolts to the wall with no legs on the front so the lower Jack rolls out easily

I usually store them in their original box. One up, one down.:lol: This is a good idea but if I were doing it then I'd probably double the shelf size so it could store two a piece per shelf then use the higher shelves for lighter weight stuff. Not that I have room for that large a shelving unit.

Now that jack storage story is what I really need.:lol: I built a U shaped thing out of wood (hem-fir studs) that my jack slides under and I use the top as shelves for spray paint. Goes underneath my higher bench unit (I also built that and it's held up well but looks awful as well). Looks dumb but has worked well.

I probably should buy a palm sander and actually finish some of this stuff. I've got the stain but I never got around to doing it. :dunno: All the stuff I build is incredibly stable and super cheap but carpenter I am not.:evil:

I store mine in the space between the garage door rails. I bolted together slotted uprights used for metal shelving, screwed the uprights to the wall and ran threaded rod between the uprights:

Don't take this the wrong way, but it seems like this post is a gigantic fuss over a time tested design..... A shelving unit. :lol: :dunno: Just my 2¢

Well shoot, we need a special post about this as well. I can't imagine how a shelf is supposed to be used. :willy_nil

If you have the space, it is a great idea. Me, I don't have the space, or double doors, lol. I have them just jammed under my workbench till I need them (I have a lift).

Funny that you posted that pic. Last summer my kids and I built a garage in Milwaukee for my oldest son. There is a space between the garage doors just like that which I told him to put his stands there. Hes in a crappy neighborhood so not sure how much he will keep in there. Nice job using every extra bit of room.

I built a nice big shelf unit to store mine on. And the top doubled as a place for my Snap On battery charger. Until I realized how much my roll around shelf ate up real estate in my shop. Right now they are under a temporary table set up in the garage. I've got to do something with them though.

This is exactly the idea I needed for the space between my doors! I have been looking at that space on the wall trying to think of a way to use it and this is absolutely perfect. Thank you very much for sharing your idea this will actually open up some space where I keep them now which can be put to better use.

I hope to make a wall mounted rack or something that would store them a bit more compact. A shame you can't turn them upside down without the mast falling out, otherwise it would be easy.

I've been thinking about welding on small pieces of tubing to the sides of the stands that would fit rods from a rack to hold them, but that may be too much work to be practical.

asmasm, nice cabinets but man there is a whole lot of unused space in them.
looks like the jack stands might fit underneath

I used some signmakers plastic called 'Sintra' on the bottoms of mine to protect the deck from dents.

I store four on a lame little cart I knocked up out of some scrap wood and old casters. 2 on top and 2 on the bottom. Then I just roll it out of the way into it's storage/parking spot.

I used to work in a sign shop. It's used as a backing for laminated signs. It comes in white and black in various thicknesses, I used 1/2 inch. (They had tons of scraps for free, but YMMMV!) I attached it with screws to the little welded-on brackets that are close to the bottom of each leg - making sure to countersink the screw heads.

I'll try to remember to take a detail shot later today..

You can consider installing hooks to the ceiling so that they hang down and out of the way from normal shelf space. It's a great way of creating storage for odd-shaped items since the ceiling normally doesn't have much "real estate value" in the garage. Just make sure they are hanging out of the way of your garage door if it swings inwards when opening.
