The Collapsible Bench

I’ve never liked those bench tops that collapse against a wall. I tried one in my last shop and found that it was always down and full of stuff and never folded away. It made me wonder what the point of the whole thing was… Even so, I love the idea of having added workspace only when you need it. This past weekend, I stumbled upon this collapsible job built by “Double B.” I think it rules!

That looks like a space saver for sure. Looks like it works well for what it was built for.

im planning (ha, dreaming) to build something VERY similar to this, only with a metal top and on casters, that will nest under my wood-topped bench.

will serve as a light-duty welding table, and extra work-space. will also have some provissions for in and out feed with a miter and chop saw...

that looks awesome!

This looks like a solid bench that should last a long time.

I've found that I don't get nearly as much use of of collapse-able work surfaces as I would like though.

Yes, that's a super nice bench, but what makes you think it would resist being covered with stuff better than a fold up one?

Definitely looks nice. I'd still have it topped with junk so it would still always be up. Something I've noticed with most of the most clever designs - I'm the prime design flaw.

I love the gate leg table design. We use one for our laptop desk. It is round though. In the garage I still love my 8' folding plastic table. Sturdy enough for 100# or so, and I just fold it back up when done and slide it alongside the convertible. This is an awesome build though. The quality, fit and finish is top notch.
