I was messing around on Flickr recently and stumbled upon this upload. While it’s not entirely related to garages, it’s a great read and there are some neat little “vintage” tips you can use in your garage. Who doesn’t like old Popular Mechanics stuff?

I have a ton of old Popular Mechanics just like that. If you hit the antique shops in your area it will not take long for you to build a substantial pile. I never give more than $5.00 for an issue; to pay $5.00 it better be real damned special cause the normal price is $2.00-$3.00 if I am buying it! Thanks for the post Ryan

Crazy, just bought this book at a salvation army for 25 cents! and another called "home automation" talked about building your own garage door opener etc.

I have the full set of Popular Mechanics Do It Yourself encyclopedias from 1955. It has a lot of the same information, it's pretty fun reading.

My main thing is collecting old Popular Science magazines. I have most of them from 1948 through 1963 or so, with some older ones back as far as 1933. I like them over PM because they had Gus Wilson and the Model Garage.

And then in the 60s, Smokey Yunick had a monthly column.

I also look for the cheaper ones - $2 or $3 is generally my upper limit as well.

I have a few PS as well. I leaned toward the PM because there used to be a stronger emphasis on machine shop topics and mechanics in general than PS. It seemed that PS leaned more toward electrical stuff, science stuff, and a bit of machine shop and mechanical just to keep things interesting. If you ever run across the PM annual publication called "Shop Notes" make sure and snag them, they are the Holy Grail of the old PM magazines in my estimation! :beer:
