Vintage Black & Decker Drill

So I was at a buddy’s shop thrashing on a car when I stumbled on the coolest little find. Apparently, my buddy’s dad had a habit of buying tools and never taking them out of the box. Sometime a number of years ago, he bought the Black & Decker drill pictured above. Before yesterday it had never been used and the receipt in the box showed that it was bought from K-Mart for $9.95.

Dig on that tiny little chuck.

I love old tools.

Re: Vintage Black & Decker Drill

I have one of those Ryan from my brother-in-law's father who was a WW2 vet and I wound up with a lot of his tools during the estate dispersal.

It's a either the polished body or a bit later with the gold/olive bakelite motor housing. Let me check and I;ll post a pic.

I can't part with it but it's hardly used.

Pieces of history baby. Pieces of history.

I got the same vintage/look B&D jigsaw, very gently used but still in the box, from my wife's uncle about 8 years ago. I've used it regularly since; it doesn't cut overly fast, but the slower pace minimizes mistakes. Seems like a quality piece.

Not sure. There wasn't a date on the receipt. I'm guessing early 1960's?

Re: Vintage Black & Decker Drill

It's long gone now but that looks like the very first electric drill I ever had . I got it for Christmas when I was 12. I remember it had a 1/4 " chuck on it, which at that time was big enough. I remember getting a set of bits with it. A box with I think maybe 10 bits in it. Got a Black and Decker sabre saw and sander a little while later. Not much by today's standards but I had a lot of fun with those tools back then.

I love those old metal-housed power tools (and the shocks that come with them.) I wonder if the coil in that cord will ever relax?

Re: Vintage Black & Decker Drill

My next door neighbor was cleaning out his basement. Mixed in with the junk, I saw that he was throwing out a 1/2" B&D drill (one with the 6" pipe handle that screws into the top and cast loop handle). I saw what it was from my yard. This drill was also still in the B&D box and was never used.

Said his family use to own a construction business back in the day and the drill was in with the left over stock/tools when they sold it off once his father passed away.

Needless to say, it made it's way into my garage.

I still have a few drills like that but in well used condition, 1/4 and 3/8 chucks one or two B&D and a Skil.

Great little drills to have for back ups.

In the late 70's,as as 22 year old first time home owner,I knew I needed some tools. Went to the local Grossmans lumber yard and bought the basics. All in that pukey green plastic, all with the 12" long power cord.Circular saw= $19.95. All others = $9.95.Most of them lasted about 10 years or so,but I still have the router! The bearings(bushings?) are getting pretty loud now....I'll be sad when it finally dies.

When I delivered newspapers that was one of the awards you could choose for adding new subscribers. So many points for each daily or Sunday delivery. 1973-76? Still have my drill in my tool cabinet

Re: Vintage Black & Decker Drill

My Dad is the same way about buying tools. He has an entire collection of tools and accessories from the 50s to the 70s that have had little to no use. I think that there's a mind-set that if you just buy the tool, the jobs will get done (like buying the exercise machine will get you into shape without using it). :headscrat

He has offered them to me several times but I've always refused because they are always there when I have to work on his house and truck.

I don't believe in tools as art. I believe tools were made to be used regardless of when they were made. In fact, I think a used tool is somehow more appealing to look at than a brand new tool.

I have that jig saw that Doug B posted. That drill is nice, a really nice find. That was back when B&D made good tools not the **** they make now. Had two B&D levels once, scrapped them for aluminum when the Level bubbles cracked and leaked.

I have the similar situation with a Craftsman router I got from my dad. New in box. Still had the copper staples holding it closed.:)

Re: Vintage Black & Decker Drill

The model number suggests this to be a pre-1970 model, but no older than about 1965. The orange trigger would mean it is a variable speed (the then-omnipresent single-speed units had black triggers), but no drill in the 1965-70 period would have a reverse feature yet.

They literally don't make them like that anymore. Back in the day we all strived to own BD tools. Nice find

I agree, I inherited many of my grandfathers tools and use them at home and work. Many tools were "overbuilt" by today's standards. I have a BD #100 that I love.

As posted i have had that same drill forever, worked ok for light duty.
I found the chuck to be real cheaply made, and the cord just way too stiff, unless you were working in 90F weather! Bad plastic coating on it of some kind, always a PITA to wrap up to put away.

I've got that same drill. It was my grandfather's. It's not a beauty but it has held up well.

In the mid '70s I was a first time home owner too. I had that very same saber saw. It was the first power tool I owned. I lusted after the other stuff you have pictured but it wasn't in the budget. We had a $400/month mortgage payment to make.

I have one if these too! It was my grandfathers. He used it, I inherited it when he passed away. It pretty much was my power drill for my entire kitchen remodel! It's now beginning to break down. Do you know a place, or company, somewhere I can send it to have it refurbished? I don't want it to break down and be unusable.

This is a vintage Black & Decker 1/2 inch drill that still works flawlesly. It hardly gets any use now, in the age of cordless variable speed drills, but I don't have the heart to thash it.

My dad has one identical to that one. I used it quite a bit as a kid. Now I am patiently waiting for my dad to offer it up. He has been doing more golfing and less "fixing".

I have a B&D drill just like that. I got mine from K-Mart in 63-64 and still use it on occasion today. Got the 1/2" one w/screw in handle with a B&D drill stand it can mount in also. The power cord on them is really stiff .
