I just picked up a mint set of pliers made by Utica. The pliers does not seem to have been used at all, all corner's/edges are factory sharp, there is no wear indicators internally, and through the center hole on the tip there are also no wear indicators or markings.

The model number seems to be significantly lower than any posted here I believe, and I'm have trouble finding pre-100 models online as well. Maybe a solid indicator of age?

Does anyone know what this pair might have been uses for? I thought at first maybe for stitching, but I realized that wont work.
The only thing I can come up with is maybe a drill guide for maybe rivets while holding two sheets together.

What do you all think?

I have a bunch of Utica made tools that I've accumulated over time, but these recent acquisitions are now some of my favorite tools that I've got. Utica 86, 43-6, and 31-8.

I had been searching for he 31-8's for awhile, but not under the Utica brand. My father has a pair of Bonney b30's (same as the 31-8) that I was very jealous of. Hadn't realized till recently that these 31-8 pliers existed.

Nice group. Welcome to the GJ.
Here is an 8” adjustable wrench I found at an estate sale yesterday. It was spray bombed silver but it doesn’t look much better without the silver paint. Works fine though. What year do you Utica guys think it was made?

D42jeep, you reminded me of this thread. I need to finish cleaning my Utica tools one day and post them here. However, yesterdays post reminded me of few sockets I had left from 25Sept2021 hawl (for few who would remember I was gifted a big bin of rusty tools after I came back at the end of yard sale to look for several missing Bonney wrenches (yes, it's been a while, I will clean up that set : )

Here are some rusty sockets here, some of them are Utica. I cleaned up one to see what's under the rust (no evaporust on this one - just manual brushing - thus not perfect inside...)
I think this is the first socket for this thread:

Man, I could add to this thread. I was born in Utica in 1961. I had uncles that worked there till the kelsey-hayes company bought them. I have quite a few of their tools, some prototypes and some made just for use on their machinery. I still use most of them to this day.

Before I posted I went through the couple "Utica Tool" threads and noticed that I have some unstamped that exactly resemble some of the ones users have posted with stamps. Hmmm, like I said, I'll just have to get them together and take some pics.

I found two pairs of Utica pliers yesterday. The large lineman’s pliers show quite a bit of use but have the three diamond logo. The longnoses are in good shape and have conventional markings.

I picked up this 60-7 nipper recently which is stamped with "Utica Drop Forge & Tool Corp." and "Utica, N.Y. U.S.A." It has the wide handles with the great looking diamond checkered gripping pattern with the squared-off ends.

Hello,

First, Great Forum! what a fabulous resource for tool lovers everywhere - I just found it/

Second, I have a Utica plier that seems unusual to me. It has smooth jaws that are wider at the nose than the base, and when closed the jaws meet only at the tip (see images) Maybe it's rare, or custom made for some particular company or industry I have no idea, but if anyone can tell me anything about it at all, I'd be very appreciative.

Thanks!Utica No. 2 flaired jaws close up .jpegUtica flaired jaws profile.jpegUtica No. 2 side.jpegUtica No. 2 closed.jpegUtica No. 2 flaired jaws side.jpegUtica No. 2 flaired jaws.jpegUtica No. 2 open.jpeg

Welcome, DIHR!

If you still have some space in your garage and couple of dollars left - RUN! This forum is very addictive and makes you collect and restore more tools than you will ever need!
I can not read the number on the pliers - it looks like No and then something else. Can you enlarge it?

It looks like Duck-Bill pliers

Shelbylex,
Too late. I'm already contemplating buying another roller cabinet because I can't get the drawers closed on the one I have.
As for the Utica Pliers, they say "No - 2" on them, and they do indeed look like the Duck-Bill pliers you provided a link to - but with the exception that the smooth jaw surfaces do not meet except at the very tips. I'm wondering if it might be for sheet metal work? Here's a larger photoUtica No. 2 flaired jaws close up .jpeg
