I did also find a Whatzit. It was coated with rust and stubborn mud in a box with old (1860's) clothing irons. Giving this thread first crack at it. My first thought was antique rocketry, almost like a flechette, but it's soft, porous metal. Malleable iron if I had to guess. Next thought was a stake of some kind, but for what, I don't know. That slot-head brass plug will not budge. I chewed it up a little trying.
Heat that end up or use some penetrating oil, but get that plug out! There may be a treasure map in there.😁

Hey, thanks you guys! She is beautiful. Her beautiful mama doing very well also!

Grodin- Lugz, think it's just my big hair in that photo, usually it's combed or shorter. My daughter will probably be watching Grodin in the Muppet Caper (an old favorite) and Beethoven with me some day.

Roger- that Enrico fellow is quite Italian looking but I can think of a number of guys who look more like him than me,lol.

Did you get it for 50% off? It's useless without the combination, LOL!!! (That would have been my weak excuse to negotiate...)

Do not heat it, there is a possibility that is an exploding whale harpoon… Seriously, it’s a thing.

The latest haul...3Baby!

Well, her mom gets the credit, though she looks just like I do in old photos.

Mr. and Mrs. 3bay get a **** from me over that addition to the family! Girls just want to have fun, but there is a lot of drama in your future! All in all, there is nothing like a daughter.

I got a package deal when I married my wife. She had two wonderful daughters, and we added another later.

That looks awful dull for a harpoon point, But play it safe with stuff like that.

I have a harpoon point, I suspect mine is for like seals or otters:

I'm finally getting around to posting a small estate sale find. Not much there, but I did find a set of Craftsman crown cold chisels, a nondescript ice pick (these come in handy) and a pair of P&C 1202 pliers in excellent condition.

Congratulations @3bay! Best post of the year, so far.

Here's my ES loot from Friday.
- GI nail bag is pretty uncommon find, and I think it'd be fitting for a carpenter's tool kit. Not sure on production date, but the color of the canvas makes me think 50s-60s, but with the WW2 FSN still visible.
- Chisel is a little short for WW2 spec, but I'm calling it used and shortened in service, at least in the short term.
- 10-X brand shooting glove
- USB powered microphone
- Light duty rope with pulley and hook. Really bought it for the rope more than the pulley system.
- Wooden clothes hanger

So my intuition was good! Haha.

Anybody remember the golf balls in line at the estate sale story? Who was that, Jakemac, right?
Yep. Rolled right out of the bottom of his nephew's pants leg onto the driveway. LOL

Cool find. I would be calling that wartime for sure. Cannot be newer than '53 with the FSN on it.

It was FREE. We were at my in-laws. Remember the Marie's Junque Shop story from a few weeks ago? The vintage metal toy cars, trucks, and helicopters? The antique RR track cross sections? The scrap books? The pinup girl letter opener? I wasn't joking about my inlaws moving everything to the house when she went out of business in the 80s. My wife is STILL going through the house. This was the first time I was able to accompany her. What's left did not sell during the various open houses they've had exclusive for various experts, i.e., jewelry, stamps, dolls, etc. There were 5 safes originally. The others were newer. One of them had all the coins, which are being appraised in NYC.

Interesting. Somewhere around second grade, I vaguely recall putting heavy cream into an empty baby food jar, shaking it, and eventually making butter (this was in school, BTW). Of course, that was something like 45 years ago, so I'm probably missing some part of the recipe there...
From what I recall, a steel bearing helps get from cream to butter quicker.

Thanks Don! Mine is a little different inside. Layout is different, no cast-in sizes for the bits & extractors, yours has several fat nut-like things that probably enable the extractors to be turned--which I believe is the purpose of my missing flat wrench which had different sized square openings along its length. My No. 4 drill & extractor and No. 5 extractor are marked Ridgid.
Any idea which set is older?

Secondly, thanks for the info about the AT tool kit. Any idea who made the tools for Packard / RR--or did they make them on their own?
The first line on that box should become my personal motto:

And...I'm going back for this, with one of my sons, my brother, and one of his sons. I could barely get one corner off the floor. Easily a 4 man lift just to get it in the truck. We're planning to use it as a rolling liquor cabinet in the parlor. Super excited about this!

That’s so cool.

That's 2 Atkins saws (Lugs & Lesser Son)...

Where's the third?
Wow. I totally missed his. I wouldn't have just posted mine so casually without mentioning it. Not just a second Atkins saw, and not just a second Atkins back saw, but a second Atkins No. 2 back saw. Same exact saw! (On second look, maybe not. His looks a little longer.) Now I am mortified to see his cleaned up. I scraped mine with a straight edge, but got impatient. He does a much finer job than I do.

Thank you, but I don’t think mine will turn out as well as yours. The rust is bad enough, I don’t even see stamping on the spine, much less hope of a surviving etch. I may get to it this weekend, if this belated winter weather gives me a chance.
