Very happy with my small haul (Lugz 2023_10) this morning.

2023_09.jpg

Top to Bottom, Left to Right...

- Craftsman BE 1/2-drive Sliding Tee with a 13/16" deep "-D-I-" socket on it.
- Very early B&S checknut wrench
- Fairmount 11/16" angle wrench (will replace a newer one in a mixed era pouched set I have that I have been trying to convert to all the same older wrenches)
- Tiny Peugeot Surpans wrench
- 1948 Snap-on 020 offset screwdriver
- Herbrand 1/4" SBE hex opening wrench with a round shank and knurled handle
- Smallest Lectrolite (subject-of-FTC-legal-action for false advertising) combo wrench I have found
- Miller Bowden Clip installer/remover
- A cool X-acto holder with a wooden no-roll handle

What's in the Baja case?

Mike

No, I have two pair and neither has that. I didn't post them here because my M.O. has always been to direct people to the VB from here, but mine are just like Don's. Curiously, though, that screw is the piece - along with the more squarish jaws, that reminds me of the Schollhorn vise pliers. Post them in the Schollhorn thread or the SIMANCO thread and maybe others will know more than me. It's almost like a hybrid special.

Slide trays for a slide projector. ca. 1952! But I'm going to give this to my younger daughter. She is a design student and really into retro and repurposing. I think she'll love this as a jewelry case.

My mother had one like that, but it was all slides. The projector was in a separate case.

Honestly, I'm not exactly sure what is, 4.c, but that is an old bomb and crossed cannons, similar to what the US Army Ordnance Dept uses, but it does look foreign, so I was thinking foreign artillery related. The letters are "RF".
My first impression, totally without knowledge to back it up, is WWI French.

As requested--BUT, not before I decided to remove the "punch" and cutter for a little more detailed cleaning. Of course, no sooner had I removed both screws holding the cutter blade than I dropped one on the cluttered floor next to my half-filled trash can with no idea of the mid- or final vectors of its flight. Got out my flashlight and my crazy powerful 1" neodymium magnet and scoured the floor for the little ******--it's less than 1/8" in any dimension. Finding nothing but metal shavings and bits of wire cast off of my wire wheel, I set to the tedious task of going through my trash can. Half an hour later I came up empty handed and was forced to expand my search area. Luckily, the most promising area was among the bottles, tubs and cans under my utility sink and that's where it was hiding.

It's interesting that each major piece has its own serial number. The lower jaw is 120611 with the last digit hidden by the handle.
Finally, and let's be honest here, I don't know what task any feature on these things was actually designed to do but the one that really stumps me is the screw on the upper jaw. It screws into the jaw for no apparent purpose. It doesn't extend into the cutting or grasping area of the pliers--there is no exit to it's tapped hole. I thought it might be to guide sewing thread but the screw's threads extend all the way to the screw head and would shred sewing threads that it contacted.

Maybe the mystery screws holds an accessory, like something for the blade to press against? Think of those hose cutters, where one side is a blade and the other side just has a pad for the blade to push against.

I did a pretty lengthy you tube search, looking for something on these pliers, no luck. I don’t know why, but I really want to know how the hell they are used..lol

I assume the name “Parallel Round Belt Pliers” is a good clue what their used for, but still no idea what their actual function is.

I seem to remember discussion in the past that the belt in question is for power transmission, like a v-belt but round.

Yeah, Jock nailed it. Different insignia for different branches. Making me want it even more now! I tried to talk him down to something more reasonable, but no dice. Vendor is not a militaria guy. Korean junker. But no dummy, either. Anything that looks interesting is typically higher. Given the terrible condition, he obviously found it in a basement or somewhere musty and abandoned with other old stuff from same house. But wants collectible retail.

I've been toying with getting a small air compressor for the garage. I tend to stay away from used ones since I don't know the history of the tank, but this is a 6 gal./2.5HP one my mother-in-law had and she just wanted it gone.

The tank was dry but it needs an intake filter, a socket coupling, and an oil change. It cleaned up pretty nice and you can't beat FREE.

One ES and I did hit the resurrected Col FM, One item from the ES and nada from the FM but I was surprised as many sellers were there as there were. If I can get the pics off my dang phone I'l post a couple of what it looked like. pretty sparse, maybe 30 ish sellers, all pro, no weekend warriors.

Just an old wall mount art or reading light:

Well, this may take a minute. This was only the second Saturday I’ve had off since the beginning of November and I scheduled it off for a couple shows to start the season. Not much happening this winter but the stars aligned for today with an auto swap meet, an indoor flea market, and a tool show. Add in a Chevelle Club meeting to wrap up the day. Needless to say with my cabin fever I went a little nuts.

First early morning began the auto swap meet. First purchase was an unidentified piston ring groove cleaner and a 6” 1/4” SK extension I needed to complete a set. $5 for this lot.
8814BF6F-4729-4D5F-9DE3-D22BC2A15001.jpeg

Next purchase was a new old stock Pocket Fisherman for $8. My grandson absolutely loves these and I grab them when I see them cheap.
D6DC63C1-9B46-41E2-A369-56C3DEBBA12A.jpeg

Next was this MAC bent handle flex head 3/8 ratchet. These MAC red handle ratchets are my favorite, I made a lot of money back in the day swinging wrenches with various MAC red handles. Also got this 1/4” GM GOODWRENCH ratchet to pair with my 3/8.
E16C6F75-DDDB-4B1A-807C-11D2F1B77A64.jpeg

Next was some Lesney Matchbox Speed Kings. I’ve been collecting them since 1976 and I just don’t see them in the wild anymore, much less priced reasonably. $48 for this lot and I am tickled.
1E3055BE-0067-43CC-BCFF-7830E51F8D5F.jpeg

Next vendor treated me really good. SK 1/2” ratchet, 3/8 Craftsman wheelie ratchet ( that completes the set for me) and an empty Bonney tin. $10 for this lot.
B5D1442B-1871-4C5B-A0A8-03801D875833.jpeg

Final vendor of the swap meet I spent money with made me one of those deals that we either love or hate, “take the whole box for $10”, so I did. Snap on, MAC, Bonney, Craftsman, and others are represented in it and I also got from him a really nice hanging display case for some of my Matchbox stuff. $30 for this lot.

This would wrap up the swap meet. I’ll be back in a bit to cover the flea market and tool show.

Nice finds Rman! Suckage awarded!

Your "3/8 Craftsman wheelie ratchet " is the RHFT, so a great user still. 42 teeth on double pawls, so 84 efffective teeth.

I like that display better than the one behind my easy-chair/office, Mine does not have the curved windows on the outer sections, so that stuff gets dusty.

At the flea market there wasn’t much. I spent $6 on these Lesney Matchbox pieces.
8F02C44C-1C20-46E6-9410-29A1443EE953.jpeg

Which led me to the tool show. Which as you all know means “pay up”.

Snap on 3/8 GFN ratchet, $10.
5B2E5831-FF53-45CC-B333-7B88270E06F3.jpeg

SK Wayne 1/4” set which is pretty complete, 3 Snap on 1945 pieces for a set, and a NAPA 3/8” bent handle flex head. $40 for this lot.
C004E28B-CCA4-46AD-A7B4-687265AF1900.jpeg

And since I was adding to my NAPA ratchet collection I had to go back and get this 3/8” flex head that I had passed on earlier for $10.
9BDEC410-27AC-45D6-94D4-CC36F0622C00.jpeg

Next was a good score. SK diamond 1/4” ratchet, 3 Snap on 3/8” sockets, and a wartime Snap on midget socket for another set I’m building. $9 for this lot.
0D8A2CDA-4C21-4510-A352-F7F180213325.jpeg

Last was a Bonney tin with a few Bonney Allen sockets and a Snap on grease cap puller I’ve been wanting to add to the box for a long time. $28 for this lot (which if you know about the GCP10 is a good deal)
DC03EE76-A6FE-4CDC-9B97-13A805F94DD8.jpeg

Thanks for letting me ramble on. I really enjoyed my day. I also put A LOT back on the tables. As I said earlier, I went nuts, but I absolutely could have lost my mind.

Thanks. I’m not a big Craftsman collector but I am a ratchet junkie. Somehow I just keep getting sets of them.

I always love a day like that, just goin' from sale to sale.

The only reason I got the display case was for the curved glass.

Beemer, it’s been a long time since I’ve had a day like this. I’m pleasantly exhausted.

We hit a few sales today and found a few things.

Mrs N_G got a Stanley 69-122 Scratch Awl for $1.00.

I found a pair of Wm. Johnson (Newark NJ) caliper/divider and 2 hammer handles for $5.00 total.

IMG_0557.jpeg

They cleaned up really nice - I just need to find a 4-40 thumb screw to replace that slotted screw for width adjustment.

Cheers

We made up for being shut out yesterday by hitting three rainy day estate sales. The first was by an estate sale company that is sometimes expensive but they were okay today. Brought home lots of rusty treasures with emphasis on the rust. DB3090E4-1465-4479-9549-739AE39F87A7.jpeg
The next sale was a family sale and prices were very reasonable. I usually don’t pick up braces but the Stanley was too nice to leave behind.296C9812-7C3C-4644-9C40-5B2D4B39548A.jpeg
The third sale was In Martinez, CA and seemed to be a gentleman downsizing his vintage user tools. I left behind two leather handle Kennedy cantilever boxes. I would have liked to just buy the handles but I have too many boxes. 4438490C-4488-4BF9-8E76-FDF239173996.jpeg
l forgot to get a picture of the Challenger set from the second sale. 46440C86-FBCA-4BD4-B563-4FA92E6F708C.jpeg

I have been looking for a cast iron tool base for my Greenerd 3-ton arbor press. I found one today (needs paint remover and repaint), and for good measure picked up a model 52 Gerstner tool chest that’s in pretty good shape. It has the key and I won’t have to repair the handle, but I will have to replace most of the drawer felts.

Yes it was. Dangerous show. I could go homeless there.
Buddy of mine was there with WW tools for sale, different friend was there buying. I've never had the pleasure, only been to the Mystic CT EAIA meet (12 1/2 years ago when it aligned with a biz trip, so everything had to go home in a suitcase)

Free is always my favorite price. Nice to see that you could spruce it up and give it more life in the family.

That stand is pretty cool, but I doubt it was ever intended to be used as you're planning. Sperry Gyroscope is bringing up lots of ship steering equipment, nothing else.

I think your repurpose idea is great, definitely maintain the label, that seems to be a good piece of history there.

That tool chest is gorgeous.

So I should bring my cup? :)

Seriously, I'd like to hear a little more.

Was there an area where vendors were selling off tables? What day was that? Roughly speaking, how "big" was it? How many vendors and what was the foot traffic like? I actually visited the PATINA Damascus on-line site after you fessed up that it was that "tool show," but it seemed like just an auction where the tools were out for examination and then bid on later. If it's not obvious, I am asking all this from a prospective sellers' perspective. I've been thinking of culling my collection in a big way and considering Allentown and Hershey in PA.

Ironically, twertsy and I were all set up to make a joint presentation at a meeting of the Washington DC chapter of PATINA a few years ago. The topic was the Roaring 20's. Then COVID hit and it was never re-scheduled.
