Looks like I have a lot of catching up to do. Garage sale season hasn't started here yet but I can't wait until it does.

No garage sales or good auctions around here yet, but the local public library has their semiannual book sale underway and I got a good copy of Alex Shigo's "Tree Pruning" for a dollar. I've been hoping to find a copy for years. 20230320_171700.jpg

As we were getting it loaded I asked what else was for sale as they are prepping to move. Gentleman mentioned he had a big vise in the basement so went to take a look at that along with some other items.
That vise turned out to be a Wilton 9400 in pretty nice shape. He actually had 2 but was planning to keep one. Got this one for $50. Date code of 8-51. Has plastic jaw covers on aluminum jaws which look homemade.43D3A724-32B4-4D54-92FF-2BABD58779E1.jpeg

Finally have something worth mentioning.

Couple of weeks ago, made it up to a machinist sale that looked very interesting. By the time I got there, some of the items I was hoping for were gone, but... it turns out that pricing was set by "a buddy" who worked with him. So have a feeling that the items would have been overpriced anyways. Talking an Atlas 10" (missing most of the accessories, which were sold separately) for $2200, a Lindon vertical Jig Borer (labeled as a "Mill") for $2200, a Gingery-style homebuilt shaper for $450, etc.

Poked around and ended up with this pile for right at about $40. Probably overspent, but the two extra blades (one NOS) for the threading tool helped. Didn't see the price on the two tooling fixtures till checkout, and by then was committed. Not sure if the fly cutter is shop-made or not, but for $3, took a chance on it. Two tool-holders were $30, and the two cut-off bars were $4. Armstrong boxes were a nice extra. The large one is for the cutoff holder, and the smaller looks to be for some kind of small bits.

Last weekend, finally found a good deal. Cruising CL on Thurs. evening, and saw a level listed, $20. Recognized it and sent the seller a message, asking about possible pickup Sat morning. He replied, and we set up a tentative meeting. Sat morning, ad has been removed, so I cautiously messaged the seller. Still on, went and grabbed this Kinex precision level, in its original box, for only $20!! When I looked up the specs, it seems this resolves at half the resolution of a Starrett 199 Master Precision (this does .02mm/m, a 199 does .04mm/m, a 98 does .42mm/m), so probably more than I need! Slid a piece of paper under one corner and slowly saw the bubble slide from max one side to another...

Pics to follow in a sec.

I just returned from a 10 day road trip around some of the western states: Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Arizona, Nevada, and California to visit friends and family I hadn't seen in years, mostly in places I have lived before. I was, however, able to occasionally stop at a favorite flea or used tool space, and do a little picking. Here are my finds.

So, in order of purchase, a Stanley chisel from the Oakland flea, a Craftsman box (full) and Thorsen 60E 26" flywheel extension from special hidey hole, Snap on FV70 ratchet, unmarked speeder, and SK spinner from Folsom Flea, 2 packages of Meister Kugeln pellets from West Coast Air gun Fair, Stanley 98 and 99 planes from Antique Trove mall in Roseville.

Inside the Craftsman box:

An almost complete set of Blackhawk loc-on sockets (only missing the 13/16ths) Amber handled Craftsman speeder, along with misc. Craftsman sockets and crossbar.

I also picked up this lamp in Berkeley's Urban Ore:

If you look closely, you can see the original '30s hand painting on it.

All in all, a great but tiring trip.
